NPC behavior-New to me

Last night actually found some time to play, so headed out to my favorite RES.
After getting the "right" instance, I noticed something new.
I'm used to small ships wings trying to escape after their leader has been killed, but I was astounded to find that this behavior is now copied by pythons, and anacondas.
Once their wingmates had been dispatched, the pythons and anacondas tried to escape, but luckily I managed to kill them before they could engage.
This behavior occurs only when they're part of a wing.
 
I get this inconsistently. Not sure what triggers it, sometimes an anaconda will run after you burn its two wingmen, sometimes it won't.
