NPC names - first name + surname or just surname?

Webapp asks for a player name and an NPC name.

I think player names are just surnames, right?

Commander Jameson, Commander Smith, etc.

NPC names - should they be first and last name?

Adam Smith, Fred Blogs? or just surname?

Think I saw Michael respond to that question, you could have a surname or first name or both, but you couldn't have titles, like "Lord Vader" (perish the thought...).

commanders name can be JOE or JOE BLOGGS
this means no one else can take the name you just entered.

NPC name is for a non playing charactor NPC so what ever name you put in there will be used as part of the NPC naming database
dont put in titles like commander , captain or admiral

otherwise when you play the game you maybe known as commander captain joe bloggs

You are correct sir!

Commander names can be whatever you want, so just surname, or forename and surname. Do not include titles though.

:D

I assume the same premise applies to NPC names.

I think we urgently need some clarity in this matter from a moderator.

This is the truth, spoken proudly.

EDIT: Touche, Slopey. ;) But actually we shouldn't have to visit the forums, let alone search; this guidance should be given on the form itself.

Also, what about NPCs? And why do we have to submit both at the same time?

What's your source for this?

What will names look like in game? will they always be delivered in full? can we have more than two names, e.g. John Roger Smith?

Does the game know the difference between a first name and surname? will it use them appropriately in different settings?

If I chose just a surname, will I be "Commander Smith" and if I choose a first name as well, "Commander Adam Smith"?

Given the confusion here some will be choosing surnames only and some not - it will be inconsistent within the game.

Same question applies - full names or not?

What about Chinese-type names, where the surname is given first?

Can we use Unicode to provide non-latin names?

I'd like to know if non-english characters (scandinavian for instance) are allowed? I'm guessing not for the commander name since other players may have to type them, but how about for the NPC name database?

Really? It's on the help thread, and on the "here we go" thread, and if you search for "commander surname" it'll bring it up. Seeing as you can't manage that, here's the quote:

Seems perfectly sensible to me.

If you choose Cmdr Adam Smith, you'll be Cmdr Adam Smith in the game. If you choose Cmdr Smith, you'll be Cmdr Smith in the game. I doubt it'll use them in game as fore and surnames, but I doubt that the NPC text will be referring to you as anything but "Commander" anyway.

Certainly for commander names I hope not. I've played other multiplayer games where non standard english letters have been allowed and it made it nigh on impossible to chat to them, group with them etc.

Seems odd to me that some will be called by their full names and others only by a first name or a surname.

What about multiple namees? John Roger Smith?

Can we use Unicode for non-latin names?

What about Chinese-style names where the surname comes first?

You've got the same post running on 3 topics now - how about you PM Brett and get a definitive?

Hi there!

As Michael stated earlier this evening as per quote:

Please do post if you need further clarification regarding as such. :)

What is expected for NPC names - full names always, with the game knowing the last name is the surname? it will be odd if we when interacting with NPCs find some with only one name and others with full names.

What about Chinese-type names, where the surname is given first?

Can we use Unicode to provide non-latin names?
