NPC or Players- how can you tell the difference?

Alrighty folks, shoot me down in flames probably, look, I have watched hours and hours and hours of you tube videos on a variety of ED but, iv not been able to tell whos a player and who is an NPC?

I'm I missing something? I know if the PSN name is something outrageous or stupid that you will tell but the videos I have seen the NPCS have normal names- there is a lot of psn players that do the same, so, how can you tell?

Is there a way I can boost into a system and have a look at the players in there and go like - yep, npc, npc, hes a player, npc ,npc theres another player etc etc

otherwise..................................................2 DAYS TO GO YIPPEEEEE

The markers on your scanner will just have their outlines drawn. i.e no solid colour.

Hollow triangle for hardpoints deployed, hollow rectangle for no hardpoints deployed.

Thanks for this great image, really helpful, so I take it then from the answers already provided, that you cant tell who is a live player and who is an NPC? or if all humans the hollowed out yellow box what are the NPC,s?

You can, as long as you pay attention to your radar.
The filled square ("Nobody" in the image i posted) is an npc.
The hollow square ("Human Player" in the image i posted) is a... well, human player, lol.

For example: Inside the radar itself, in that image, none of thoses symbols are human/live players, just NPC's. Even the bad guy (in red) behind you is an NPC. Notice that it's a filled symbol, not a hollow one like the "human player".

Hollow triangles and squares are players, their name has a CMDR prefix.
Solid triangles and squares are NPCs and other objects that aren't players.

EXCELLENT @ ASTROPALMA AND ZIEMAN.......................thanks a lot guys for your explanation. iv got it now. just with all this conspiracy bull I suddenly thought its important to know this as I just realised I didn't know!!

cheers[yesnod]

One day, 14 hours, 54 minutes, 33 seconds.

I'm on mountain time so, 2 hours more than you. But it has started, I'll need the extra time, because of my slow connection. I'm just hoping it stays up, if it goes down, I'll need to start the downloaad process again.

You can't scan an entire system and see a list of players. The likelihood of encountering other players depends on whether it's a popular system. Popular systems means there's more chance of players entering the same instance as you.

As per radar pic: hollows = humans.

When jumping into a system you can quickly scan the radar; then pull up your comms panel, 2nd tab, and check the players in the local area. It will show all humans "nearby", and all your friends anywhere in the galaxy with distance to them.
For "nearby" humans, that is ones in SC if you are in SC; or those in normal space if you're in normal - but it will not show SC humans if you're in normal and visa versa.

On PC you can also press Ctrl-B to see Bandwidth usage, and essentially spot if there's anyone in your instance (but may be out of "nearby" distance or are loading in etc).

Some of the PS4 specifics we will get answers to in 2 days time...

Oh Yea!, That again. I still have tingles all over from the last one. [yesnod]

Well your post linking to my happy countdown made me feel nostalgic, so I went back to my starter system today (Allesus Primus) to run missions and passengers at my old stomping grounds. I'm even using ships like the Viper III and Cobra to recapture those magical early days :D

I figure while I'm there, I might as well earn an alliance with the Pilots Federation. Back when I started, I didn't know about faction reputation - I just thought missions made money. I was very wet behind the ears as they say, as I didn't even know the galaxy map would plot a course for you, so I used to plot all my jumps by hand, LOL. I've come a long way since then!

One of the biggest reason's I did the RTR. It really teaches on how to utilize both maps. Which comes in handy for plotting and those times where a glitch puts one in a different system than they had planned and how to get back on track. Not knowing how to use the maps to assist, caused me to abandon some missions in the earily days after launch. Yeah the mulitude of cr's and increase to pilots rating was a reason also, but not the main reason.

I did that as well, now at LHS 3447 at Trevithick dock. I sold all my big three ships for smaller craft, which I can engineer to the hilt, and redo the missions I missed in my haste to get out of the bubble. Cobra 3's and 4's, AspX, T-6's and one T-7.

Wanted to get this done before the upcoming release, as the chance for those nostalgic days will be over.

Be well.

I did it in two sections, the first 220 was in a noisy stipped down Diamond Back. The rest a month later in a stripped down quiet Python. I installed the absolute minimim to make it go and got 46.5 for range. But like you said, I believe it will be short lived and die out with the next patch.
