NPCs killed mission pirate. Mission vanished. Zero credit.

Had an assassination mission.
Dropped in, found the target. Vulture.
Attacked it nonstop until it got out of my sights at 5% hull.
Other NPCs killed it.
No bounty. No mission update. Nothing. In fact, the mission totally vanished from my log.
Come on!

Actually, this is a GOOD change. You failed to get credit for the kill because you were too far away from other attacking ships (I think I've figured out that this is the criteria). This in itself, isn't ideal, although, it also wouldn't be ideal if the ship that caused the most damage got the kill credit, as the NPC had legitimately escaped you, if you think about it. The GOOD part of this, is prior to 2.4, if this happened, you had to abandon the mission and take the reputation hit. At least it has now been made so the whole mission disappears (not unreasonable, the mission giver got a kill confirmation, he's happy he doesn't have to pay you :))

Everything was well within the scanner range. The ship I was attacking was less than 3km from me and one of the attackers had just flown between us.
EDIT: 3km not 2.

My scanner range is 9km ;) If I got credit for all kills I had hit in that range, I'd be a rich man. :)

I'm just telling you what may have happened, it may not have been distance in this case, but it certainly plays a role in the calculation the game performs. In your case, perhaps it was some other criteria, such as you didn't do any of the last 20% of hull damage (for example, you don't need to tell me if this is the case or not, it doesn't matter). SOMETHING, a combination of circumstances, led to you not getting the kill, it does happen, happened to me last night as well. Like I say, be glad there's no penalty for this any more. This is definitely not a bug that needs fixing, I do multiple assassinations every night, and I always have a feeling when I'm going to get the kill or not, if there are multiple attackers, based on how much damage I did, how much fire they're taking from other ships, and how far away I am. I often think I'm not going to get the credit when there are lots of ships around, but I usually do. From the game's point of view, when 4 or 5 ships are attacking another, it must be pretty hard to decide who to give the kill to, you know what I mean. ;)

You failed the mission, the FDL is good for assassinations primarily because it's fighty and fast.

Might have to do these missions with "report crimes against me" OFF.

EDIt -- oh **** ... the data link is disabled for these missions, so disregard what I typed !

Could be the target popped a heat sink or something, causing your target lock on him to disengage. I have had a couple like that in the last few days and it seems if you don't have the target locked when it goes bang you don't get the kill.

Pirates will steal anything, including your kills.
They should be killed without mercy.
The NPCs were defending themselves from the pirate lol

I did not say I dropped target lock. I said he was no longer in my sights. Meaning he was not directly in front of me.

Did you really expectr to get credit for the kill when you didn't kill them?
Actually yes. I expect to get credit for the kill because that's how it works with the system security forces, or at least it seems to be the case. I have been reloading when they killed a pirate (the last couple percent) and gotten credit.

It isn't like I hopped in and did nothing, I did the vast majority of the damage my friend.

I can see that I shouldn't bother posting this kind of thing because there's always plenty of people willing to tell you off for expecting perfectly reasonable things. Clearly you didn't bother to read past the topic headline.
