Null barriers

Do I need to have them at the bottom of say unclimable cliffs? I started making a more naturalistic habitat and went back in and added the null barrier which dramatically increased the calculation od how large my habitat was.

Nope, null barriers are there only to make a full circle for places where no normal barrier is needed. On top of the cliff is good too. You just need them to complete the enclosure.

You can use them anywhere there is a natural (or unnatural) barrier that prevents animals from traveling. The use of the null barrier is to put it anywhere the animal wouldn't be able to pass anyway, such that you don't need an actual fence because something else is acting as a barrier.

Just a few examples:
  • Cliffs, steep hills, either above or below, either works.
  • Moats and chasms (with steep sides, filled with water or not as desired)
  • Rivers, lakes, etc. for animals that cannot swim. Make the banks steep enough and they also work for animals that can swim.
  • Trees/plants that block traverseability.
  • Rocks that block traverseability.
  • A building or other constructed object. (Animals cannot pass through construction pieces such as walls).
