Number of players in each instance?

Hey, as the title says, how many players in each "instance" is it? I mean what are the chances of meeting other players ingame... Havent met so many since the beta period. Would be nice if someone knows :)
 
I would like to know that as well, at the moment even though playing in the "open" there does not seem to be too much difference from visiting fringe systems, where there are very few human commanders, and core ones which had hundreds of ships passing through them each day reported in the traffic log.

Currently, it's a maximum of thirty-two players per island (plus plenty of NPCs).

Thanks - does the island size reduce, if you have more than 32 around, do you know what is the mechanic, or where can I read about it?
 
And don't forget that as you move away from the starter systems, you will likely see fewer human players. The galaxy is a big place and you can pop off in any direction. But you may find a pattern or hear of certain places where players tend to hang out.
 
The theoretical limit is 32. However, that's pretty much impossible to reach. The size of the island is limited by a criteria of performances, and this creteria is limited by the lowest quality connection of players in the island (Because each player is connected to every other players via p2p). So... If you find 32 people with high-end fiber connection in the same city, then probably they can all meet into the same island. Otherwise, forget about it :)

With a medium quality ADSL connection, I've never met more than 4 or 5 people at the same time (But I'm not exactly in the core systems).

The Island size doesn't reduce. If there are 32 players sharing an instance and another player enters the area, the matchmaking server generates another instance for them and starts filling it with any new players that arrive. I think the maximum number of players anyone has seen so far in one area, is somewhere in the low to mid 20's.

Keep in mind that it's not like all these players are entering a fixed instance. As I understand it (subject to correction), each player is their own traveling Island bubble centered on their ship, and the matchmaker dynamically loads other players as their Islands overlap close enough to be seen visually or on sensors.

So as you travel through space, other players may be dropping in and out of your traveling Island depending on their flight paths. I don't know exactly how large the Island around your ship is, but obviously it's large enough to cover the area around space stations, Nav beacons, Extraction sites, and so on.
