Hm. I can't say for elite, but X3:TC had a choice between a bar-based shield/hull display, and a numerical percent-based display.
Personally, I found the bar-based version much more understandable at a glance than the numerical style. Basically, any sort of visual interpretation of the shield strength - a bar, a sphere, a disc, that obviously changes it's properties, will (imo) be more easy to read in an instant than a two-digit number; for a two-digit number, you have to pay attention to what it actually reads, and parse that into a mental "good-not good" scale. Whereas with visual display, that info is instantly seen and you have to pay less attention.
Just my thoughts.
Hm. Maybe a toggle to show/not show numerical displays would work?
