Hardware & Technical Nvidia 1060 6GB or Radeon 580 8GB

Having to build a new system as mine is on it's last legs. Pretty much settled on most components apart from the GPU.

So for general gaming (on a budget) on a ASUS PB278Q at 2560x1440 which you you pick?

How's AMD's GPU drivers these days?

Cheers

Maybe let the dust settle with the new Nvidia GPUs release. It's quite possible prices will drop a little bit quite rapidly. Although I'm not sure how RTX2080 announcement would affect prices for cards of this caliber.

I'd love to wait but my current PC is more or less in intensive care as it is :)

I'm not sure I'd be of much help then :) I'm definitely biased toward's Nvidia. Despite their shady marketing as of recent, and some questionable business practises I think they make better GPUs.

Since the monitor isn't a Freesync or G sync it really doesn't matter. Get the card that you can afford. I would recommend getting a 4gb or higher to "future proof" it.

Prices are coming down, I just picked up GTX 1080 for $429.

For me GPU is mostly about the power usage (which is why i have a 1050Ti now!) so i would lean towards the 1060 as the most efficient design.

Yes ! Very important the power usage.

In the final term, can multiply the card price several times, compared to the real use

I have the RX 570 4GB in my desktop with the very old and respectable i5 2500K @ 4.5Ghz. I get plus 60 fps on most games at 1080. It cost peanuts too. I haven't had NVidea since my GTX 280 burned out in 2011.

Garix: why can't you use your old GPU for now?

I can (for a short term) but I've lost total confidence in it.

I'm not 100% sure whether there is an issue with motherboard or GPU.

My old GPU (780) blew about 18 months ago and was replaced with the current 970. Problem is it's starting to crash in exactly the same way. The monitor basically loses input and the PC needs a power cycle to get it back.

All my GPU monitoring stuff doesn't show an issue apart from suddenly not reporting anything (as if the card has been shutdown) and there is nothing in the windows Event logs to indicate a crash of any kind.

Getting tempted to just buy the system without GPU and see what I can find on Ebay. Problem with that is not knowing how a card has been treated. Has it been OC'd within an inch of it's life?

When you say let the dust settle, how long are you talking? Are you saying the next couple of days for Nvidia's big 20th Aug announcement, or are you talking about months of settling?

I'm getting a hankering for a new card myself ever since mine starting blowing puffs of smoke.

Do tests with your graphics card on a friend's PC.

You'll know if the problem is your graphics card

And it turns out the card is the issue and it causes damage to the MB? It can (and does) happen, how happy are any friends going to be?! It's not always a good idea to swap electronics component between systems unless you know (100%) that it can't happen.

What your describe isn't impossible but it's highly unlikely. I built and fixed computers professionally back in the 90s and I've worked on many systems since for friends, family and myself and I've never seen a mostly working component damage others. In fact this is how computer repair shops troubleshoot problems like this.

In my experience flakey behavior is often caused by a bad power supply. I recommend trying your GPU in another system and a friend's PSU in yours.

How often does this behaviour happen? How long between crashes?

wait... 1 week and see what's coming, you may find a new 2060 which will be prices at 1060 current prices performs like the current 1080. wait don't buy a GPU now.... 20th we think there is an announcement... keep an eye out

I wouldn't hold my breath on that, from all reports there will be a price increase commensurate with the performance increase. Also, the equivalent to the GTX 1060 never comes out until much later. Usually the GTX 1080 and 1070 come out first and the 1060 closer to the holidays. But this time around it will likely be 1080 and 1080ti equivalents that will come out first. https://techreport.com/news/34004/pny-reveals-rtx-2080-ti-specs-and-potential-1000-price-tag

Whatever the case, we will know soon. For me, I picked up a GTX 1080 $429 and I highly doubt the next gen cards will beat that price/performance level.

Between the 1060 and 580, I'd lean toward the 1060...not that the 580 won't suffice, mind you.

Prices are pretty close and the 1060 is modestly faster. 6GiB of VRAM is also plenty for ED as it will struggle to use more with any settings that don't have major issues, even on much more powerful parts.

The one and only thing that would make me lean towards ATI is Freesync. I've got 3 good enough old monitors and if I ever want to replace them I cannot afford G-Sync.

Incidentally this line of thinking led me to me to get a VR HMD. Why replace my monitors with something bigger when I can make the world my monitor. Of course VR is not a monitor replacement yet due to resolution and a few other issues, the level of immersion blew me away. Just because I am talking about VR, sadly a 1060 does not suffice for Elite Dangerous VR.
