Obsidian outpost...

Just watched my favourite Elite Dangerous explorer "ObsidianAnt" implode and loose 4 months worth of exploration data during a livestream due to an input glitch.

https://youtu.be/3BXuenXpDXo

Absolutely gutted for him. I genuinely think that Frontier should honor a fallen commander and install a deep space outpost in that system as a tribute to somebody who has brought so many people into the game, got to admit Obsidian Outpost has a ring to it!

*Edit*
Just a little clarification on what happened...

While livestreaming around a black hole, ObsidianAnt's HOTAS setup was giving ghost inputs. First ejecting all his heat sinks, then a couple of minutes later jumping to full throttle, engaging silent running and then opening the galaxy map. It seems it was a combination of the black hole and momentary panic/confusion but mostly silent running and a lack of heat sinks that resulted in his untimely demise.

Its every explorers nightmare, i think. I've seen it on stream, and i can say i was terrified.

Hopefully support can help him, but i still think those first explored by tags and progress towards elite explorer are lost. What a shame, they cant restore those data, i guess its too much load for they servers? I dont know.

A sad and tragic event.

If this is not due to a bug in the game itself, then unfortunately those are the risks of deep space exploration. Would the game be worth playing if the risks were nullified?

Found it thanks

I just got back last night from my first trip to the core, and neutron star fields.

I hope to make Elite but due to a dumb mistake (doing repairs which in super-cruise and switch off my FSD) my canopy went critical about 19000ly from home.

I was seriously nervous about NPCs on the way in, but docked at Taylor Station in Lakshu.
I chose this destination as it was right on the edge of inhabited space, and the station (not an outpost) was <7ls from the entry point, and independent rather than anarchy.

I can't imagine how I would feel about loosing all the time and effort. I feel for you mate.

But also understand how easy it is to have a tiny lapse in concentration. I was very lucky to survive.

Agreed. Exploration without risks would loose a lot of its appeal.

In this case ghost inputs from his thrustmaster x55 fired off all his heat sinks, meaning a few minutes later when he really needed them he was screwed.

I salute you Obsidian Ant. Mentor and Explorer Elite.

Getting the data back and safely uploaded can be heart stopping. My last trip, interdicted 3 times between final star and station, after so long in deep space its easy to forget basic controls when under pressure. it was messy but I somehow managed to dock safely. Now back in deep space where all the drama seems so far away. But really, I feel for Obsidian's loss.

What was the input glitch?

(I'm in work and vids are blocked)

Ghost inputs from his thrustmaster, he's basically not doing anything and his ship goes full throttle, fires off all the heat sinks etc... he mentions later in the video it only happens when he has a mic plugged in at the same time as the x55.

In this case the ghost inputs fire off all his heat sinks about 2 min before going full throttle into a black hole, he might have stood a chance at escaping if he had any heat sinks left. Sadly his ship hit about 260% heat levels and then it was all over...

Thanks Jon. Very unfortunate for him, I've enjoyed his vids.

I've hit (emergency stop - too close!) two black holes this week and survived both encounters with minimal module damage. Guess I've been lucky.

My X52Pro sometimes glitches so the throttle won't go below 300Km/s or thereabouts, not great when exploring and I can't simply unplug/replug anymore since moving to Win 10 because of the mess between Saitek's drivers and the USB 3.0 ones from Intel/MS.

I thought the X55 was a Mad Catz/ Saitek hotas?
Weird glitch, whatever the stick was. It should be preventable.
Sorry for your loss, CMDR O Ant

I'd be in favour of a station as well.

I've been watching his videos quite often, but didn't see yesterday's upload as I was busy. Now the tragic news caught up with me :-(

Horrible news. My salute goes to Obsidian Ant, as one of my alltime favorite explorers.

A station would be nice, but does not make sense so far out. What about a beacon and a wreckage field, as sort of a monument, that fellow explorers can visit.

The heat damage was because the input glitches accidentally engaged silent running, you can see the message just before it opens the galmap. I'm surprised he immediately thought the heat was due to the black hole given how he had just been explaining how BHs no longer cause heat damage! Just shows how hard it is to think clearly when in a panic situation.

It's not a bad idea to unbind any controls like silent running when out exploring...

X-55 is Saitek (lately Mad Catz), not Thrustmaster.

They are known for input ghosting. I connect my X55 only right before i launch Elite. Never had any ghosting issues since day one.
