ObsidianAnt video about odyssey delay.

Today's OA video was great. Its perfect fodder for DD, so worth a link.

What i found encouraging from the video and in contrast to the usual dd pov:

  • There's evidence that console ports were strongly correlated with graphical downgrades in the pc version of elite.
  • While respecting the fundamental seriousness of covid, didn't buy that the delay in odysee was just because of it. There may be additional more normal delays that are being publicly written off due to working from home (and what's the worst offence regard covid, disrespecting or using it?).

Sorry for the clickbait title. For all future posts from me that are critical, please assume im also speaking in a quiet mild voice while reading them. Thank you.

Without being too nit-picky...

What caused the developers to have to work from home?

Unless all of the staff had synchronous very high speed fibre connection to the internet they would have been taking an instant 'hit' in performance to their normal working environment, I'd imagine that at the start of WFH this was unlikely.

But let's not dwell on the fact that for about 9 months Frontier staff have been working from home, instead let's propogate conspiracy theories that it was going to be delayed anyway, it is much more a spectacle that way 🤷‍♂️

That is precisely what I said in another thread that is now locked. We need to stop believing that Covid is responsible for all the world troubles. Partially yes for those unprepared but c'mon, get the grip people... For any failure Covid is now just a scapegoat... Sad really...

Edit since the thread title has been moderated no need to mention it now.

But that doesn't excuse the content of the video. The only redeeming feature of which is his admitting that everything in it is pure speculation.

And then some, I'd add.

Lending any credence to the idea that what happened with CDPR's console failure has anything to do with Odyssey or fdev is poor form enough by any old random on the Internet but I thought Obsidian Ant knew better. And rehashing baseless speculation (no, op, not "evidence" as you call it) from three years ago - as a talking point just to attempt to support that fallacy above - that the planetary graphics issue was a deliberate ploy to dumb the pc down to mirror the ps4....

I don't subscribe, personally. But is this typical of the videos he produces? Basically, disingenuous nudging of fdev to suggest it's OK to admit the delay isn't what they said. CDPR admitted they lied, guys... If you did, we won't mind! Just be honest!

Pretty low bar. I watched it through but I can't see any compelling reason to watch any more in future.

What difference does it make if (and it's a big if) Covid is being used as a scape goat though? If it's delayed it's delayed no matter what the reason(s). Surely the only important thing for us end users is the timing of when we get to play with the expansion, not having the list of reasons why it was delayed.

No, much better that we use CDPR as a scapegoat for literally everything in the industry from now on, right?

Look what happened to cp2077! That explains FDev's delay!

:D

I'm just joking but I think the video's got absolutely nothing in it worth sharing. Except him admitting there's no substance at all to what he's saying. I mean that bit was genuine.

Ps the delay just means I'll get to play cp2077 more :D

Meh. In light of the fact that I'm restricted to 2 fire groups, eliminating swathes of interesting builds, merely because of the console burden race, a slight delay to dirt legs is yawnable.

The difference is botched PR. FDev does not have a best history of great PR really... If they would say: "It is delayed, deal with it" some would cry, some would express frustration here. They chose to use Covid as a reason and that is very poor reason... Everyone does that and more and more of us know exactly that Covid can not be blamed for everything... Some stuff just does not stick...

Most companies didn't have the technical infrastructure to support their entire staff working remotely, and many still don't.
You can't magically go from a central code repo with 0 VPN infra to magically having everybody working from home like no big deal in a day, week or even a month.
Buying things takes time, building systems takes time, FDev like many companies probably didn't want to spend the money for the "two weeks to flatten the curve" to build the infrastructure for a fully remote workforce.
Second lockdown happened and they probably only had a certain capacity, staff quitting / laid off / sick or the like. This is really the norm for most companies, even technology companies.

A business is designed to run at the lowest possible cost with the highest revenue, you don't invest in 5000 VPN licenses when I less you're a fully remote company and having to source that during a pandemic isn't easy.
