oculus announces Quest

I shall expand my comment above...

Everything that is 'new' could be classed as a niche. The trouble is, the word 'niche' is used as a disparaging term, and makes it sound that until something is 'mainstream' then it isn't worth the effort, which makes no sense at all...

VR works, it is here, and is improving rapidly.

Sadly I ordered the Vive Pro last night as while it's stupid expensive I'm not wiling to wait another year for Oculus to bring us what HTC has had on the market for about 6 months now.

I did the same a couple of weeks ago. I'm not really that interested in mobile VR, my view is that Oculus really needed to be releasing a Rift 1.5 or better this year (or early next) in order to stay competitive.

I really like Oculus kit but when I can have cable free PC VR with higher res I'll be going for that and that's just what I did.

Although it seems nice to be able to have your cake and eat it unfortunately compromise is made. With the Vive pro the image is downsampled - to the point where it looks only very slightly better then the og Vive and it also adds latency on the pro. HTC for ya. Amateurs.

If you're gonna go pro don't water your money on the wireless kit work is be my advice.

Sadly the Vive Pro didn't make it longer than 30 minutes with me as IMHO it's awful. Yes, the image quality is nice but it's stupidly uncomfortable - I can't understand how they could make it so terrible. Had several family members try it and have read many of the same comments as it just doesn't fit the back of your head like the Rift or even Vive with DAS fits. On top of that

- Stupid expensive
- Tiny sweet spot for vision, outside of that everything is blurry
- You can see the rings in the lenses
- Hugely bulky/heavy compared to the Rift (the Rift feels straight up tiny comapred)
- Has to use DisplayPort meaning I can't do triple monitor in Nvidia Surround anymore (have 3 DP monitors and if I mix in HDMI with them it doesn't support surround)
- Did I mention stupid expensive?
- Did I mention HORRIBLY uncomfortable?

Oh well, I can take that $900 and put it toward a 2080 Ti (if I can find one)

Video coming in a few days.

Clearly you don't care nor understand VR, so your comment is completely invalid.

And StarVR is not ever going to be a consumer level CR system, so that's another invalid and uninformed comment. Seriously, if you're not interested in VR, why bother coming here and dissing it?

Woah, relax, I wasn't attacking VR, just sharing my opinion. I'm completely in love with VR, and absolutely in favour of high resolution/FOV VR headsets.
I was one of the first backers of the dk2. I'm VR for life.
I just don't think we'll see these high res headsets for a long time, because VR itself isn't mainstream yet.
As for starvr one, it will be available for consumers, just a damn high price point.

Will the Oculus Quest work with ED? If so, how? Trying to decided on getting a Rift now or waiting for this new one.

not as a standalone device, the whole point of the quest is to be self-contained, it has it's own processors. unless someone devises a way to use it as a streaming or remote 'terminal' ... this could be theoretically possible, but no idea.

No.
It does not.

Now as mentioned I'm sure someone will hack a stream solution for it but at best this will be a very subpar experience and require even more finagling and will be a pretty much a hacked on solution.

I would not recommend it.

I’m not a fanboy by nature and I hate evangelists, but EDVR is something I care about deeply. Even from the first moment in a dk1 it was so obvious that this was going to be the future ... not just of gaming, but of everything!

It has been a joy watching the tech emerge over time to dk2, vive, rift, WMR and (hopefully) pimax. I collect the headsets and only really use them for ED, so the quest is pointless for myself in its current iteration.

Everyone has their thing - mine is EDVR, but I can tell you this with certainty ... once VR becomes affordable, portable and completely immersive (most likely incorporating AR), then whatever your thing is you will be doing it in VR!

VR is the future of technology, commerce and recreation- there’s just no doubt in my mind.

Quest is just another step on that inevitable road my friends :)
