Oculus DK2 Dark Blue / Purple Shadowing on cockpit window bars when moving

Hey CMDR's

I have just purchased a DK2 for my first VR set.

I have run through the set ups and tips which have been posted on these forums and they have been very useful and things seem to be working fine.

I have however noticed that when I am out in black of space, I can see dark blue or purple smudges from objects like the cockpit bars and edges of objects when moving, these smears last for a fraction of a second before merging into the bars of objects again. Its not a game breaker but now I can see it, it is hard to un-see it >.<

I have tried using ED Profiler but for some reason my stick settings are all missing so I haven't used this app. I have also changed my huds to the Turquoise / Blue setting which is nice and clear, but I have a suspicion thinking about it that this may be the problem. I cant check due to being a work now but will try changing it again when I get home.

Does anyone have any advise on this issue, or can help with set-up. I run a 970GTX card. Maybe I am just missing something silly, but as I am new to VR I am still learning and don't really understand all the graphics settings and meanings.

Any help would be most appreciated :)
Kind regards,
CMRD Flaxton

Known issue with oled screens I'm afraid.

There is a time delay before a completely off pixel can turn on and with quick, or not really that quick even, head movements will result in a slight smudging/blurring effect in low contrast areas.

It should be possible to alleviate this by increasing gamma and brightening the base line, but that can leave the image washed out.

It's a pick your demon kind of deal.

Both vive and cv1 has this issue, not tried a dk2 so don't know if that is worse.

Yeah, before CV1 dropped with oculus runtime 1.3 (or whatever it was) you could completely mitigate the 'smearing' issue by adjusting some of the RGB colour outputs. You can't now. But in exchange we got ATW or the other one that removed the judders when FPS fell below 75 FPS.

You still get smearing in CV1 but no where near as bad.

Congrats on entering the VR field. As explained above, we DK2 users had it good until CV1 came out. Now (understandably) the drivers and settings have been optimised for CV1 as DK2 is no longer supported.
The effect can be reduced by having gamma turned up a bit to stop the pixels from going completely black as this is when they are at their slowest refresh. Means that space isn't black but thats the trade off.

You should be able to get used to the smearing. I hardly notice it anymore.

I stopped flying the Anaconda because of the smear. The huge bulkhead in front of you smears like mad when you hyperspace etc. :(

No biggie, small ships are far more fun.

@OP
Now you have VR, seriously consider learning to fly FA Off. Game changer! :)

Thanks for all the advise guys, as soon as I get back home tonight I will play around with the Gamma and try and tone the smearing down a bit using that.

The difference in game play between a screen and the Oculus is worlds apart. It becomes so natural to look above you as a ship flies over and track it with your head. I didn't even think about it, it just happened.

I managed to pick up a brand new, unopened DK2 complete set up for £109 inc. delivery. I thought for that price I can afford to give it a try before thinking of the huge upgrade cost for something like the CV1. I would probably need a new graphics card for that headset so looking at a £1k budget. At least I am now on the VR first step and loving it.

Hopefully I can pick up some more tips and trick to improve things at LaveCon as well. Cant wait !!!!!

Like CMDR Flaxton, I picked up a DK2 for cheap - and saw it as a great way to test the VR waters without diving in headlong. Also, like most people I've become a convert and certainly can't think of playing my regular games (which co-incidently all seem to have the best VR support and/or are best suited to VR - namely ED, Am and Euro Trucks, Project Cars and Assetto Corsa) back in 2D. And, again, I've been looking to move on from the DK2 to the CV1 - slightly better resolution, touch controllers, long-term support etc - until recently. Whilst researching, I've discovered the CV1 seems to suffer from God Rays in a way the DK2 doesn't, has only a small resolution increase, and none of the games I play require touch controllers, which leaves me thinking I might be wiser to simply keep the £400+ it'll cost to switch from DK2 - CV1 (ebay prices for CV1+touch). At least for the moment. And especially as I recently discovered that covering the DK2 screen with matte anti-glare screen protector does wonders for removing a large slice of Screen Door Effect (didn't even need to do a teardown on the DK2 to get to the screen either - simply remove lenses, feed squares of the protector thorough the holes and with a little care bingo! SDE reduced. It's not perfect, but covers 95% of the visible area and can be re-applied to my own satisfaction).

Yeah

The DK2 is really REALLY good. I had to save for a long while before I could afford the CV1 and Touch controllers. In the mean time I repeatedly dragged my mate round with his CV1 and then later with his Touch controllers.

I think there are things that the DK2 does BETTER than CV1: a larger sharp focus(?) zone and no god rays

The CV1 cons:
  • A narrower sharp focus zone - as soon as you leave it, you notice that you get a bit of blurring radiating out; this is really noticeable on smaller text.
  • God rays.

Now, the narrower sharp zone become far less noticeable when you are not looking at small text. BUT remember, the DK2's lower resolution and lower pixel density prevents you from even reading the text! The god rays are only noticeable on really high contrast scenarios so once you are in game you hardly notice them! You really notice them when the game is loading though!

CV1 pros:
  • Higher refresh rate - 90 as opposed to 75; this may not sound like much but if ATW cuts in, which is anytime your FPS drops below the refresh rate (90 or 75, CV1 or DK2 respectively) your refresh rate is halved so 45 in the CV1 which is OK. The DK2 is cut to 37.5 which is a HUGE difference.
  • Most text is readable though some still difficult to read.
  • Brighter - the pixel density is greater, with less bezel between pixels
  • No head tracking blind spot. The DK2 has about 30 degrees where you loose headtracking, the CV1 has 360 head tracking. You can look around the cockpit at will.
  • In ED I noticed things seemed to look a bit 'bigger' and had a teeny weeny bit more presence compared to DK2
  • Reduced smearing - not vanished, but soooo much better.
  • The increased resolution reveals things that were largely hidden in DK2 - subtle one but cool!

If you were on a budget I wouldn't bother upgrading.
If you do have the money I would go for it. But first, set the HMD display to 1.25 because that will be the same resolution as the CV1. If your rig can handle that, job's a gooden!

Also, if you buy second hand, you might not get the free stuff that comes with the touch e.g. Robo Recall (amazing AMAZING!!!!), the two graphics apps or Dead and Buried. You WILL still be able to get the free Google Earth VR which is amazing!

Hope that helps!

Just a quick update.
I messed around with the Gamma settings and raised it up to 2 notches from the maximum in game. This pretty much cured the smearing when moving, certainly to the point where it is not noticeable.

I have been having a lot of fun in the rift so far, however I landed on a planet for the first time and had a go in the SRV. OMG how mental is that. I managed about 10 minutes of bouncing around before I had to quit. I was getting a headache anfd felt a bit dizzy. I think the movements may have been a bit too frequent and extreme for me to cope with. I need to get used to it a bit more I think before SRV playing.
I have also lost my ship in a hanger on the planet and couldn't find it in my buggy haha. Might have to load up without Horizons to jump back into it :p

Thanks again for all your advice guys :)

Two things you can do to find your ship.
Main one.
Request boarding via the usual docking request method, the nav ball shoukd point to tge closest garage.
Then you can drive into any garage and board ship via the crotch menu.
Or drive 5km out and recall the ship.

I'm loving the dk2. The key setting which made it usable and 100% better was changing the in game supersampling to .65 and raising the HMD quality to 2.0.

This had no effect on the framerate and literally brought the dk2 to life. If your not doing this try it.

All the best.

I'm still using a DK2 too. I bought it used from craigslist back in Dec 2014 when Elite was released. I cannot go back to a 2D monitor. I tried playing Elite on the monitor (even with Track IR) once and couldn't fly my ship out of the mail-slot. I guess I'm too use to VR since that is how I've been playing Elite since I bought the game.

My neighbor has a CV1 and I tried it to see the difference. Granted, the CV1 is the better headset but in my opinion not worth it for me to upgrade to it (and upgrade my rig to support it). I run the DK2 with full Ultra graphics settings and 1.5x HMD and 1x SS. I should try the .65 SS with 2x HMD as recommended above to see if it looks even better. Currently, I have no frame rate issues with my current settings and I know I cannot replicate 2x HMD and full Ultra with the CV1 on my current rig. I'll wait until the 2nd gen VR set before I upgrade my rig to support it.

For now, the DK2 still gives me an experience unlike anything else in gaming with Elite. It is a great choice for budget minded people wanting to get the VR experience in Elite. I used TrackIR for years in games like ARMA2 and it is nothing compared to VR. The best analogy I use is that with Track IR, the monitor screen "moves" in relation to your point of view. In VR, "you" move within the world in relation to your point of view.
