Oculus - Galaxy & System Map Help

Hi guys

I love playing ED in VR but the galaxy map & system map are almost unusable, before i declare them unusable am i doing something wrong?

Its all setup fine but i cant click on any star systems in the Galaxy map and struggle to to select anything in the system map.

In the galaxy map i am resorting to checking for systems in EDDB and then having to type them into the galaxy map all the while peeking under the headset, in the system map i have to use the keyboard to navigate around, its like the mouse and galaxy map aren't aligned.

Am i doing something wrong or this is just the way it is? shame because both are glorious to look at in VR

Cheers

Neither are easy in VR, but I find a couple of techniques help.

Galaxy map. Cant do much about the typing, but for navigating about, view the map from the top down. Moving around the map becomes a lot easier then. Have your cursor near the middle of the map, then move the map around (and up and down) until you are over your target. When the selection panel pops up try moving your head to get the cursor over the buttons rather than moving your mouse. If the selection panel disappears just move away from your target and then back again. It should reappear.

System map. Again have your cursor near the center of the map. Zoom all the way out to move to the body you want to select. Then zoom all the way in (no too close if it is landable though or it will switch to the surface view). Again, when the selection panel appears, move your head rather than the mouse.

Hope this helps.

For Galaxy Map navigation - turn on the grid (options tab on the map). This will make a round cursor appear. Use this cursor to navigate.

I play with an X-box controller (the one that came with the Rift). I find the system map and galaxy map pretty easy to use, although sometimes navigating the system map can be a little slow.

It sounds like you are trying to navigate the maps with a mouse. This doesn't work...

Bind the galaxy map controls to your HOTAS (or controller). For example, I have the left / right controls set to my joystick, and forward / back and up / down tracking to a hat on my throttle.

As another poster said, it's also easier to navigate by 'looking down' on the map (you are in the map, not simply looking at it flat), and you will find that once the targeting 'disc' gets close to a system's 'stalk' it will snap to it.

You'll want to play around with the control bindings to see what works for you, but once you get used to it, IMO it becomes fairly easy.

Sweet i'll try the grid when i get home, also yes have been using the mouse i'll try the HOTAS controls

Cheers guys

Am I right in thinking 2.4 has really improved galaxy map for VR users?

And as Faded Glory said, if you have HOTAS it is really worth one's while to set it up to control the map. Use the stick to control the cursor xyz translation and the throttle etc. to pan / tilt / zoom? Or some other combo?

You do get used to it!
