Oculus initial reaction from a now possibly ex-XBox player

So, I've been playing this wonderful game since GPP on the Xbox, and have finally gotten round to upgrading my PC and grabbed a Oculus last week.

As with most initial reactions to when you experience VR initially, just wow! I've never ever expected such an incredible level of emersion as to the level Frontier has achieved here and I've in half a mind to cash in my XBox assets, and transfer them all over to my PC account. I not sure whether I can go back to a non-VR Elite :)

The update to 4K with the XBox One-X was pretty special, but this, even though granted, the quality isn't up to the 4K'ness of either the PC or One versions when run with the right TV/monitor, is something else. Currently have a couple of mill in the bank and a Cobra MK III, but see myself possibly never touching the xbox version again now.

Have spent the week tweaking settings, getting to know the limits of my PC (Ryzen 1700X and a GTX 1060 6GB, which I've not yet OC'd) and so far haven't been disappointed with the results. My mission is absolutely now to obtain every ship so I can just experience the unbelievable cockpits that are fully realised in VR.

I bought my Rift in Jan of 2017, and have not played any games on my monitor since.
Just recently started getting into Elite, and yes it is gorgeous in VR. I just now have to get my head wrapped around it.

VR is super nice, especially once it’s all dialled in.
Think I been using mine since last summer. I recently fired up ED on my triple monitor setup to tweak some settings. (Quicker to do so without the Oculus for what I was doing)
....I havent been used to playing on a monitor for over a year, and man, everything was just like random ‘moving pictures’ the HUD just blended in with everything else. And I literally was visually lost for while. Without the true 3D environment and no binocular vision and all that. Flying and landing the ship was crazytown.

Flimley

I tried to SRV on monitor last week while testing out my new VA music packs and was right back where I started pre VR with feeling like I was almost unable to see where I was going.

Glad vr has clicked for you, you're one of the lucky ones :)

For me, I tried it, was bitterly dissapointed by the near total lack of clarity and depth and immediately switched back to playing on a monitor. The rift has been gathering dust ever since.

Great to hear OP, I'm in the camp of not having played much at all on my monitor since getting my rift too :)

Jon Flint, lack of depth? uhm... not sure how anybody can ever say there is a lack of depth in the rift compared to a monitor, are you sure you had it set up right?

I've been collecting ships too on the PC just to see them in VR lol

If you need a break from Elite check out the new game Beat Saber - I'm having a blast in it!

For me VR is a niche product for specific games like ED and Subnautica(and others). This list,no doubt, will increase in size in the next 2 generations.
I also play "monitor" games like GW2 and Factorio.

Best of both worlds :)

I am blind in one eye so that probably plays a part + I guess over the decades my brain has just learned to give 2d screens perceived depth.

With vr in elite, the cockpit looks wonderfully 3d, but everything outside the ship just lacked scale or depth, just looked like a 2d matte painting outside the ships windows. Other vr games never had this issue, played lone echo and enjoyed it.

probably? Nice to have some context for your issues with the rift, would hate to think you were trying to naysay the product without providing any...

Grabbed it Friday (well it was star wars day :)).

Love it! and the kids were just as happy. Every tune is a banger as well and can't wait for more tunes to be added. Brilliantly implemented.
