Oculus Quest 128

I just got a Oculus Quest 128. I can connect to my pc with a direct line so I can play rift games. I got this game. I when through the tutorial. I have played EVE in the past and other pc games with space fight and fighting. I really like how the game looks in VR it is bad ass. The only down side is the way the controllers work and how you have them laid out in the game. I have mine set to default.
Between my head movements to activate screens this is a cool concept but they way you guys make it work is less than desirable the few times I reach that Zen moment and everything aligned I did some pretty amazing moves. These Zen like moments only last second though. Most of the time I feel like Im flailing with the controls and buttons activating things I didn't want to then trying to figure what I hit that did that and hope to hell I don't activated anything else while I'm trying to undo what I did. So I spend hours trying to learn these controls that in my opinion are not set up correctly. If your going to use vr then let me have control of the vr hands in the cockpit that way I can use the controls in the freaking game. Instead of your drunken fumble fest that you laid out. Please make this more user friendly if you want to go vr let us use the arms and fingers in the game on the controls of the vehicles. Or total redo the mess you have now if I can't move my arm or hand the do not waist time rendering them. I hope you guys get this all worked out in 6 months or so. Until then just like In EVE Shangya Out If you need some directions I get out free advice and ideas.

Longtime Elite VR player here. In VR you really need a HOTAS to play. The experience becomes so much better. With a HOTAS properly set up, it is superior to a cockpit point and click system using VR controllers.

I have been a longtime player on the xbox. I have bought a oculus quest and elite on my pc. is there anything special program i need to run it on the quest. i have seen some tutorials on sideloading stuff. i am dying to try ED in VR. I play with the Tflight hotas so its works with xbox and pc. any info or tips is appreciated.

I am not familiar with Occulus Quest, but you might try to have a look at this video. It's for setting up for running Half Life Alyx, but procedure should be the same for setting up for Elite.

When i play Elite in VR
1. I start Oculus software
2. then start Elite
and i in VR. :)

You need setup elito to vr:
1- Make sure the oculus software and device are turned on
2- Then start Elite
3- go to Elite setup graphics
4- Select either HMD and accept it

whichever controls you use in vr you need to commit them to memory first. this takes time but once you do you'll go zen full time.

If your going to use vr then let me have control of the vr hands in the cockpit that way I can use the controls in the freaking game

explanation: elite dangerous doesn't support vr controllers and likely never will, it wasn't meant as a vr game (despite the "built from the ground up for vr" advertisement which is an outright lie). but as a seated (cockpit) game vr works good enough with any controller, you just need to get used to them.

and that's actually a good thing. there are LOTS of inputs for the game, the more buttons you have the better. once you have interiorized those controls and they've become second nature is when the experience really shines and gives you an incredible lot of freedom by using your hands (and even feet) irl. best used with hotas and pedals but actually anything will do, even mouse&kb. i can't imagine how nasty, cumbersome and limited it would be if i had to activate all controls ingame with my touch controllers in vr. this can be a cool gimmick to activate a few options on a panel, but for flying a spaceship? no way. if i were forced to use vr controllers i for sure wouldn't be playing elite in vr, meaning i wouldn't be playing elite at all.

So I spend hours trying to learn these controls that in my opinion are not set up correctly.

yes, it takes time, and the control configuration is really messy and can be a nightmare, but it's really worth the effort. patience, go for the basics first and slowly add bindings as you progress.

Re: menus - bind a button (yes you really need joystick and throttle for this game, makes it much better) to open the panels. If you open them via button press they will remain open if you dismiss them with the "ui back" button or the same key you used to open them. I use "headlook open" only if I need some quick glance, things like request docking permission and such. If I plan to spend more time in a menu, for example to manage power priorities or search the nav panel I open it via button press. It is also important to have all the ui navigation keys bound on the hotas.

Another protip: Galaxy map in VR should NOT be used with mouse. You should use a controller for that. Bind all axes + ui nav keys and you're set.

As for playing SteamVR games, my friend @SimplexPL has a Quest so this is what he told me: you stream pc to quest using Virtual Desktop, however you need to sideload it because Facebook forced Virtual Desktop to remove the feature. So get a proper Virtual Desktop version and sideload it to the quest and stream away using WiFi. Elite should be fine, it's a really slow game so lag shouldn't be a problem. That said, you are better of buying a link cable anyway. From what I heard, it no longer needs to be "oculus branded", just a good quality high speed usb cable. Don't take my word on it however, as I don't have a Quest myself, do your own research first.

PS: If you find virtual desktop useful, don't forget to support it by buying on another platform (e.g. Steam), as the quest store version was gimped by facebook.

Did you try X: Rebirth VR using Oculus Touch though? I tell everyone this experience can be transformative and HOTAS feels antiquated after that

I have a PC and oculus rift S & a Quest. The Quest belongs to my missus who plays them dumbass wave your arms round stuff.
So.. one day l decided I'd look at elite on the Quest using an official cable to link it to the pc.
Fired it all up got to elite cockpit on my account. And Omg... pixillated grindy laggy lumpy horrible...5 minutes later I've tweaked and it's still a slowmo mess.
Switched back to my rift S and yup perfection smooth seamless no lag. Mmm
So if anyone can enlighten me I'd be happy to hear from you.

oooook, you finally managed to get it into my whishlist ... 😂
Just make sure you get a proper version which supports touch properly. It's a bit convoluted. SteamVR version was meant for Vive compatibility, while Oculus' one was meant to be for, well, Oculus.

EGOSoft FAQ said:
2. Which VR headsets and controllers are supported?

The Steam version of the XR VR Edition supports the HTC Vive (headset and controllers) through OpenVR.
The Oculus store version runs on Oculus Rift and supports the Oculus Touch through the Oculus API.

We are now also providing an Oculus build on Steam for customers to choose from. This build does however require the Oculus store to be running and logged in in order to correctly show the Oculus Touch Avatar (your hands!).

The Open VR version, which is the default on Steam does also run with the Oculus headset, but does not support the Oculus Touch controler.

Both versions of the game can of course also be controlled with joysticks or gamepads OR with a mixture of joystick and VR controllers. (see details about controls further down!)

If you have problems playing with the Oculus Touch controller, you may by accident be playing with the wrong version. In the Steam frontend you can right click on X Rebirth VR Edition and select "Launch X Rebirth VR Edition in Oculus VR mode"!

The game is reported to also work on many other headsets, like the Microsoft Mixed Reality Headsets (see next answer!), but without VR controller. We can not guarantee it to work on all such devices.

We do not officially support other VR headsets (e.g. OSVR) at this point, however the Steam version is using OpenVR and should be compatible with systems that support this as well. Any feedback is very welcome.

PS: in my opinion, Touch version is superior to Vive version because thumbsticks >>> touchpads :)

Looking through that FAQ I got an idea on how to try to simulate oculus touch on my SteamVR + knuckles controllers. I will try it later today after work, and let you know if the steam version oculus support works, as the FAQ is really messy on this one. If it works with knuckles, then it will work with real Touch controllers most likely.

if someone knows German, here's another excellent video explaining how cool the motion controllers in X:R VR are (actual talk starts at 3:23)
