Oculus Quest 2 for Elite Dangerous

I am considering buying a Quest 2 for family gaming and Elite Dangerous for PC VR. As I understand it with the original Quest, to use Quest with Elite Dangerous on Steam VR users installed a third party software and used the 5 GHz WiFi band, rather than using the Oculus Link cable. What's it going to take to get that to work with the Quest 2?

The Oculus Quest helmet will work perfectly with the Elite game even without Steam, but only if the game was purchased from the developer's website, and not in Steam.
You can read about connecting the helmet via Wi-Fi here -

Yeah no quest 2 or any other facebook HMD is a non starter for me due to them requiring a facebook account to log in....this is a piece of hardware like a monitor and as such should not require any kind of log in to be used. Imagine if you were "required to log into social media" to use your new PC monitor...how well that would go over over so I do not get how people can be okay with hmd's requiring this since they belong in the monitor/tv/projector/3d tv etc etc category.

I think a 'burner' account is the solution for me, they can have the minimum of my data. The commercial model in tech is sadly partly based on 'stores' (Oculus/Apple/Android/Amazon/Xbox/PlayStation) until a major trading block realises how that damages almost all economies but the US one and legislates again it, we're stuck with it. We are where we are.

Indeed however facebook wants you to use your REAL info and if you get reported or caught using fake info they can ban your account...guess what will happen to your games you have bought?

@Space Dandy. Thanks for the warning. I checked FB policies on 'integrity' and maintining multiple accounts is aginst the policy therefore what you say applies, even if I give them honest details, as I already have a FB account. They have my data already! I just didn't want to link a VR account to this. Seen as the family gaming is a significant driver I'll have to accept letting another evil empire take a little bit more data I expect. Which I guess probably also means that when my 11 year old uses the Quest he's be automatically logged into my FB account. Not ideal.

Fairly certain at some point they will be sending you ads based on your telemetry they gather every time you turn on your facebook hmd even sebastien from mrtv has some serious reservations about facebook forcing log in with them to use your hmd.

For myself I will just skip the whole problem by using a G2, pimax looks interesting but they are having some serious growing pains and quality control issues still.

Good luck and happy VRing with which ever HMD you decide to buy!

Facebook buying Oculus led me to get a Vive instead of a Rift back then (among other things), now I have an Index, the Vive is for my kids so we can play together in VR (or they can both play in VR). Virtual reality is really a great family experience, and I do hope that there will be ways around the advertising and data feeding for the oculus devices in the future, some 3rd party drivers or something.

No matter which device you choose, welcome to (nearly) real (gaming) world!

With a young family the all in one part sells over the PC tethered HMDs. Facebook may have produced the 'Amiga of VR' here, grey-haired reference. I don't see much commitment from FB of playing nicely with other platforms like SteamVR which is concerning.

I currently own the Rift-S. I have no intention of having facebook have more data about me than they already do (I rarely use my account). And I do not agree with having to log into facebook to use my VR. So when I replace it eventually, what options are there? I know of the Vive and Index and G2. so what are people's thoughts on these as their preference and why? Oh and I prefer the Rift-S's not requiring sensors on the walls.

The G2 has inside out tracking too, so no need for sensors. Having 2.5 times the pixel density of the Rift S you are going to get a much clearer image, but the downside is you will need a better graphics card to run it. Mine is on pre-order and it should arrive next month.

What is it going to need? I have an RTX2060

Hello.

Apart from facebook this thread is called “Oculus Quest 2 for Elite Dangerous”, not “do you like facebook and if not what VR goggles will you use then”, sorry…

I like to start with VR and I’m asking whether the Quest 2 (Q2) would be an appropriate entry level model. I use a notebook with a Ryzen 5 processor with 8GB memory and WIN10.

The Q2 is a stand alone system. Does the VR support the PC in graphics or is it on the PC to do all the work and the VR is just a display?

I think the post from <Meresiga> was about the Oculus Quest.

The Oculus Quest helmet will work perfectly with the Elite game even without Steam, but only if the game was purchased from the developer's website, and not in Steam.

Will the the Q2 will work equal good for ED, or will the Oculus Quest be a better choice because of the OLED display (for the dark)?

@ISUAS, I came to the conclusion that this is the wrong group to ask and that VR is still in the hands of PC enthusiasts. No offense to anyone here but it feels like the group doesn't have the direct experience to answer the question. The tech is a bit low end for this group.
I convinced myself that Oculus is still interested in supporting the Steam platform and developing the Oculus link. So theoretically it should work with Steam VR.
But the direct experience of the forum is linking ED with third party software ALVR to the Quest from the frontier store launcher. I have a concern that this approach was taken because Steam VR doesn't work, but no-one has said that directly.
I am sadly guessing the Steam VR would work. I should really check the Steam forum or FDev support to see what their experience is.

Im guessing that at the moment there is not sufficient an answer. this really wont become apparent until the Quest 2 launches. Like everything else , its new technology. Unless or until people try it out and report back, we can only go by what is being said by those who are testing the Quest 2.
I hope it works out for those who buy it, but for me, it would be like taking a step backwards. Im used to the higher quality images of a pc based VR. Before I bought the Rift S I had the PSVR. Even between those 2 there is some difference, enough to have me purchase the Rift S. I guess its horses for courses.

If you are looking for a first vr headset, quest 2 is the way to go. Very good price/quality combo. Especially if you want your whole family to use it. Being wireless is hassle free and you just might end up getting a power bank to extend playing time.
You can also play games from your steam library through the oculus link, that has always been the case and wouldn't change.
Another method would be to play them through wireless through the new wifi 6 that quest 2 has. There would be lag issues from what I understand and can't tell you for sure how it would work because I have never tried.

Now going by, and this is subjective, the through the lens videos and comparing quest, quest 2, reverb 2, rift s, index quality, there might be another option.
If you plan on making the quest 2 a family headset, you could get a second hand rift s just for pc gaming. Should be cheap at this point. Resolution is very good. Colours better than quest 2.

Hardware wise, given that quest is is higher resolution than rift s, you might need a beefier gpu. Maybe a 2070 or at least 2060 so you can get the most out of the headset.

Either way it's a great time to get into vr.

Thanks @Paso. A great response. The Quest 2 is on its way, my wife insisted, and it's going up against the low expectations we have for winter in 2020. Family gaming will be the main use.
A good point about a second hand headset for the PC. We'll see how VR goes down.
I've got an RTX2060 right now so I'm optimistic that will be credible for VR. I think the possibly of VR was always part of the upsell I did to myself after looking at the 1600 series.

I actually decided to go for the quest 2 too.
Already have the rift s.
But I'm thinking some games are way more fun wireless and I'll give the oculus link a shot for Elite dangerous, maybe even try playing it wireless and see if I can stomach the lag.
I'll post my impressions here when I get it on the 13th.
Hopefully you guys can do the same so we can let people interested know how it handles ED
