Oculus Rift arrives today!

I am excited!

Have a quick question...I found my VR Key on FD Store. Do I need that? I already see Elite VR in my Steam game library.

Welcome to a new game :D

The keys from FD are for downloading the VR version from Steam/Oculus. But if you say its already there Then you might not need it. Just have the Oculus home app open and launch from Steam or the desktop shortcut.

You can launch the steam version with steamvr, but it won't run as well as the regular version (download the launcher from the frontier site) or the oculus version (you can claim a key on the frontier site).

Afaik you can't select native oculus in the options if you're running the steam version.

I am running the steam version. You are saying that its easier to run ED from the launcher (the one that Steam launches?)

If I launch my steam version I can't select oculus in options. Steamvr works, but it seems smoother/better looking if you run it via oculus or the non steam launcher.

OK. Install went off without a hitch. I just need to find a good link/tutorial on what the Display settings should be. SS, Anti-Aliasing, Blur, etc etc. I need to find a good tutorial on those settings. Using preset VR Medium I was between 30-40FPS. Would like to try getting that higher.

I have also seen a lot of posts about using the Oculus Debug Tool. Is that really helpful?
Lastly, I use EDFX for my 2d version. Is there a VR setting?

Hmm that's interesting. Does Oculus actually make game tweaks to make it run better through their launcher? I'm going to try it the way you guys have said, but it doesn't seem like that would change anything lol.

Via the oculus launcher or the regular launcher should run with the same performance but the oculus launcher has better "dash" support.

With the steam version you have to run via steamvr which runs worse for me (or spacewarp doesn't work, dunno).

If you claim the oculus key on the frontier website oculus gets a kickback every time you buy an ingame item for elite in the frontier store, that's why a lot of people prefer the regular launcher.

OK Found several threads and videos. This one in particular: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=121355

I am way more confused than I was to start. Many of the video's/posts seem outdated and have many "this doesn't need to be done anymore" tags....so now I am not sure what settings in what programs I need to improve my FPS.

There is a lot of old info out there including the stickies in this very forum. You really don't need to use any 3rd party tools anymore such as the oculus debug tool. EDProfiler is a good tool if you decide to use it for tweaking your settings. Also I don't think reshade or EDfx work with the Rift.

I would post your specs and see what the community think you should try. You should certainly be seeing more than 30-40FPS. The Rift tries to run things at 90 fps and when it can't keep 90 fps it will drop you down 45 and use ASW to fill in the missing frames and simulate 90FPS for a smooth experience. If you are getting less than 45 fps then something is wrong.

See Above. Just posted specs.

Are you seeing that 30-40FPS all the time, or just in stations?

Here is something to check (Windows Game Bar / DVR recording enabled can impact performance.)

How does it look? Never mind (for now) the FPS number...

Something I would try, barring useful input from someone with similar specs:
Set to Low presets, then dial up various settings to fix the things that are bothering you, while maintaining an FPS you can live with. (Some people are super sensitive to lower FPS.)

A few subjects that seem to have widespread acceptance:
1. Decreasing HUD brightness and/or changing your HUD color to blue or green seems to help with text clarity
2. HMD image quality and Super Sampling settings seem to have the strongest impact. Try both at 1.0 & see how it goes.

Good luck. & let us know how it's going. As with all things E|D, there is a learning curve. [noob]

It was while sitting on the landing pad of a planetary base.

I will check this out for sure! Thanks!

I adjusted the brightness. The text seemed a bit blurry. Also, I had this weird "greasy" glare as if my lenses were smudged or something. I cleaned them off and seemed to still get that "greasy glare". Other than the those two issues, I just experienced the dizzy/nausea issue that most get when getting into an Intense VR game. I turned on the two settings in for Vehicle Maintain Horizon Camera and Vehicle Motion Blackout to help.

I will be honest, I went from "VR Ultra" to "VR Low" a few times, and didn't notice a change at all. I may have had to restart ED, but nothing seemed to look better when I jumped to VR Ultra. It seemed to look exactly the same to me.

I will change the HUD Color to see if that helps. I have EDProfiler so that should be easy enough to do. As for SS.... went to .5 and everything seemed squashed down. Will try 1.0 (it defaults at 1.25 I think). I didn't think to mess with HMD Image Quality. I am not sure I even saw that setting.
