Oculus Rift - can you still get the DK1 to work?

I've just seen a cheap offer for supposedly new DK1s for £40.

Obviously it's miles behind the Rift CV and the Vive, but before shelling out £00's, it'd be good to get a feel for VR and whether I think it's worth the cash.

So, even if a stop-gap measure, does anyone know if you can still get the DK1 to work with ED? Anyone still actually using a DK1?

thanks all ;)

This might work: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIYRift/comments/4wnlad/guide_steamvr_on_dk1_and_diy_vr_using_osvr/

However besides the low resolution and difficult setup there is another huge blocker. The DK1 does not support positional tracking. It has no tracking sensor. You can rotate your head but it cannot track head movements. I think this is key for a real VR experience. The DK1 is not even worth the £40 for these reasons IMHO. Better to find someone from whom you can rent a HMD for that money.

thanks - hadn't realised the DK1 was that far behind. Without having ever tried it, I'd agree that head tracking seems fairly fundamental.

i guess you could rig something up with an ED tracker, but I think it's probably beyond the "what the hell, why not, it's only £40" stage!

Thanks for the heads up (no pun intended...)

Can confirm that then dk1 will work with ED, only downside is you can't see the numbers of the landing pad on your scanner.

Would be better off getting a CV1 or getting a second dk2 on ebay. Managed to get one for £120.00.

The positional tracking makes a difference. Not bothered by screen door effect on dk2

If you wanna have a cheap try at HMD gaming i can recommend getting a cardboard and streaming the game to a smartphone, thats how i got my first taste of "VR".

Most phones that came out in the last two or three years will have a screen that rivals or outclasses that of the DK1 and with the built on sensors you will have rotational tracking, just like the DK1.

I first built myself a head tracking rig with a playstation eyetoy camera, some IR leds, a trucker cap and played on my 50" TV with the HOTAS X which was nice.

Then i hung a cardboard from the shade on the cap and got stereoscopic 3d and rotational tracking, the resolution was too low to do more than combat training missions since i couldnt read any text but that was enough to get me to hunt down a DK2 back in early 2015.

When i put the DK2 on the first time ingame i started giggling like a little girl, "Im in a space ship :D" "I have a space ship in my living room", didnt wait long to get some rudder pedals to expand the experience, played elite throughout 2015 till the release of the Vive, got mine on the day of release.

Fell out of playing elite since i was enjoying the room scale stuff so much, didnt even try elite till the winter but then i got back in hard and upgraded to Saitek X52 Pro hotas, been playing almost exclusively elite since then.
