Hardware & Technical Oculus Rift - New Crescent Bay Prototype

Hilarious the reactions of the faithfull that had just received their DK2's ;

omg the sky is falling in, I'm gonna contact my lawyer if I don't get a crescent unit, i'm sending this pos dk2 back etc, etc.

If people are that touchy, they really should wait until CV1 and then complain. :D

On a different note, headphones are such a personal thing that whatever Oculus were to incorporate into a headset will never be good enough for some people.

lol

People who are around £400 worse off as a result of DK2 take note, DK3 or "Crescent Bay" is still going to be blurry and crap and a nuisance to set up for nubs, until they actually put HD oleds in them and get software vendors to support their tracking, which will work nicely but will up the price to retail at about £1500 just like a Sony HMZ, don't believe Oculus when they say they are just testing to see which is the best screen, they already know...they just can't afford to use them, this is why pie is in the sky and pigs can fly :)
Clearly Oculus could make their commercial unit now if they wanted, but they know no one will buy it for £1500+, think about it it needs HD oleds and a ir tracking system and a gyro, it aint gonna be cheap if it's gonna be any good, don't hold your breath.

What reactions? I've not seen anything.
Reddit?

Worse off? Disagree. I'm having an amazing time with the DK2. Just amazing....but when I bought it I knew all the downsides, and that still makes no difference...amazing.
After a while your brain blocks out the fact you're in an OR DK2. My high res gaming monitor just doesn't come close to the immersion an OR provides.

I will, and I bet many others will, purchase a DK3 and even a DK4 before the commercial version is available.

I purchased mine for 2 reasons:

  1. To help Frontier out with any OR bugs
  2. Because I wanted to experience VR for the 1st time ever

Best £300-£400 I've spent in a long time, apart from the DDF.

Comments were popping up on twitch during the live stream which was hilarious, it made it difficult to concentrate on what John was saying...:D

I think the problem with the rift hardware is chicken and egg as with all cutting edge computer hardware; you want to use the best hardware, but it costs big-time and always there's that knowledge that in a years time (or less) something else will come along which is even better.
As someone has mentioned, they know what they want to produce, but the cost would kill the already specialist market.

This is supposed to be mainstream tech and it won't be at £1500 a unit.

Troll alert (yes we know nothing will ever be as good your amazing Sony HMZ )

Didn't see them :(
Saw lots of ASP jokes ;)

I agree, been the same with hardware for years. More noticeably with mobile phones in the past decade.
At some point you have to take the plunge.

Also with the DK2 it's not like anyone has pulled the wool over anyones eyes.
They've said from day one that this is a dev beta and gamers shouldn't buy it.
I'm happy as a mouse with a house in a block of edam with my DK2.

I could never use any screen that I couldn't read text on at distance, specially in a game like ED, I want definition better than my monitor, in fact I demand it is at least as good, so far DK2 is nothing but a crude badly made badly designed cheaply costed toy.

Sorry, but I couldn't disagree with you more. Looks like you're in a very small minority who thinks this.
I can read txt on mine perfectly.

What is your hands on experience with a DK2?
Have you actually used a DK2?
I mean properly used it and calibrated it, not just popped one on for 2 mins at a show or a mates house...but I mean really used one in anger on a PC with a decent GFX card?

Not trolling, only mentioned the HMZ as it has excellent optics and they come at a price that's all nothing amazing about it, I think Oculus are being disingenuous regarding their strategy, and so far nobody has managed to really convince me otherwise, fanboys however are another thing entirely even worse than trolls, no doubt Oculus has it's share of employees with ED forum accounts.

I prefer to use the internet as a form of market research, so far you are the first and only person I have seen comment that the optics on the DK2 are fit for purpose lol it's a phone screen magnified so obviously you are going to see pixels etc. Even people who love it are like yeh it's cool but I wish the image was better. Ebay is already flooded with units that people bought tried and swerved.

My first thought was it takes away consumer choice of using a separate headset. What about a microphone? Needs headphone socket instead.

LOL Wokawidget please don't feed the troll ;)

There is a another thread where he embarrassed himself with lack of technical knowledge and fully admitted never having tried a DK2 hence his reply above "I prefer to use the internet as a form of market research".
