Oculus Rift question(s)

Sensor Confiuration
My sensors are on my desk, and it's entirely possible they could be nudged/moved slightly at times. When I come to use the Oculus, do I therefore need to reconfigure/calibrate the sensors each time?

If so do I need to go through the rather lengthly Oculus setup of:-
- holding the controller at head level
- ensuring the sensors can see the controller
- re-painting the safe play area

Or, is there a simpler/quicker way to achieve this?

Safe Play Area
Are there any means of adjusting the behaviour of the safe play area and where/how/when the virtual walls are displayed in your VR scene?

I got a bit annoyed from doing this each time i moved a sensor and also the virtual walls distorted my gaming experience. My solution was, that i switched off the Guardian system and bought a carpet, that approximates my play area. I chose one that feels different from my regular carpet, so i can actually feel, when i leave the area. Works flawless for me.

So if you turn off the Guardian system you obviously then lose the virtual walls appearing while playing...

But if you move a sensor a cm out of place? Do you then need to completely reconfigure your sensors (even with no Gardian enabled)?

ps: If I was to do what you do, I'd buy a front door matt as I literally cannot move I have such a small space!

You can turn the walls off in the oculus menu, as for cameras
I find them relatively flexible, and I would only really bother calibrating them when I was getting really bad distortion on my play area.

If what you want to do is play ED, you don't really need to do any calibration. the F12 HMD reset is all you need.

I'm not sure someone has managed to build a tweaker for the gaurdian system yet, But there is such a thing for the Vive.

Tracking works flawless, even if you move or turn the sensors. No problems so far. I have not recalibrated for months. The exact positions are only needed for the Guardian system to work correctly.

The sensors don't need recalibrating as you just need to hit the F12 key to reset the central position of your head.

That's nice to know...

I assume F12 is in ED land? Rarely visiting there now TBH :)

So what if you want to do this in other VR titles? Is there a way to quickly recenter you position/direction?

My sensors are also on my desk, and I know they get moved from time to time, but I've not needed to recalibrate.

Question about F12, but I haven't been able to get it to do anything. Most of the time my POV is perfectly aligned with my 'body' in the ship, but occasionally it will be slightly off (in front or behind). Should F12 correct that? If I restart ED it fixes it, but that is a bit long winded.

It might have been rebound to something else.
I'd recommend checking your in game keybinds.
I think it's labelled "HMD reset".
And it sorts both alignment and position in the rift.

Click the cog in Oculus Home (top right), settings, devices. Click configure Rift and select from the drop down what you want to setup again.

As for in game centring, on the right hand touch controller, hit the Oculus button, this will drop you to another screen (no idea what its called) point the target to the arrow icon jobbie, I think it point up and to the right and this will take you to the re calibrating/centring screen, hit A on the touch controller to calibrate/re centre and then hit the Oculus button again, this will put you back in Elite.

While you're in various games, you can also use the Oculus remote control to pull up settings, and reset the HMD orientation that way as well.

As others have noted, bumping or moving the sensors will only screw up the Guardian positioning, not much else. But I wanted to add-- The only other time you'll really need to run the configuration again is if you decide to change which way is "forward" by default. That is, when you're in the Oculus Home lobby, which way do you face to look at the menu windows?

I'm glad that the "front" is part of the calibration process now. When I started using my Rift, they didn't configure that by default, and the system chose 90 degrees to the right of my computer to be the "front". That's no longer an issue now. :)
