News Oculus Rift SDK update

Hi everyone,

Oculus are about to release SDK 0.7 for the Oculus Rift which removes the ability to roll back to 0.5, so we wanted to make you all aware of some important information.

Players using Oculus Dev Kits should continue to use the 0.5. Oculus Runtime for Elite: Dangerous. Upgrading to the upcoming 0.7 release will not be compatible with our game.

As long-time supporters of VR and early adopters of Oculus, we remain in close communication with them as they work towards a production version of their SDK, but want to be open that without that SDK in hand, we cannot guarantee future compatibility.

We will keep you posted.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Does this mean that there will not be updates to the Oculus support until at least 1.0 of the SDK?

No, this means when they get the SDK they will work on it. 0.7's direct mode is going to be the same was the 1.0 SDK. I don't think they will be changing much after this update for the DK2.

Could be taken that way. Could also be taken that they can't provide support until (as they say) they have the production SDK in hand. That will be 1.0, when CV1 is released next year.

Just want to clarify on that.

Edit: Can totally understand why they wouldn't want to develop to a moving target, especially when it already works with an older SDK, but it would just be good to know if I'd be able to play with Windows 10 or not (0.5 doesn't work on Win 10).

Running the latest with Windows 10 using the fix and extended, it works like a charm.

Then you are one of the lucky ones. I tried it with the fix, and it stopped Windows booting entirely. Had to find out how to get into Safe mode just to delete the drivers so I could boot again (hint: Microsoft really don't want you to do it).

So, you'll not update it when the 0.7 SDK is released ? Man that's sad, i've been waiting for a VR update for ages.
I've got to update to the 0.7 for many reason ( being a dev is one of them) , so i guess i'm saying goodbye to Elite for a while. I can't stand playing it without VR now.
Sigh, i was really hoping for an update :( Why do you choose to skip it until 1.0 ? I mean, 0.7 API is supposed to be much closer to it... that's a shame really, elite was the best VR experience one can play until today.

Thanks for the heads up but that statement is somewhat vague. Do you mean you will not be trying to get .7 to work and nothing will be worked on until you have V1.0 available or are you just saying no guarantees at this stage?

The wording of that statement implies that they are talking about v1 of the SDK not 0.7

I'm hoping you guys will be able move to 0.7 or later as soon as you can, as currently I can't play at all with the rift due to moving to Windows 10 as they existing Oculus Rift drivers are not get compatible..

My own stupid fault for jumping the gun on the upgrade of course. ;)

Thanks for the heads up! I appreciate all the hard work that's going into supporting the HMD tech, I couldn't play this game any other way now..

I think we're over-complicating this.
Upgrading to the upcoming 0.7 release will not be compatible with our game.
When v0.7 releases, it will not be compatible with Elite, because they have not had access to 0.7 to implement it yet.
As long-time supporters of VR and early adopters of Oculus, we remain in close communication with them as they work towards a production version of their SDK,
They still plan to implement v1.0 and want to continue to support VR and the Rift.
but want to be open that without that SDK in hand, we cannot guarantee future compatibility.
They can't guarantee that v0.7 or v1.0 will be compatible, or when their compatibility will be added, until they can look at the SDK.
