Oculus Rift vs DK2

High guys

i had a play in VR using the Samsung Gear VR and quite frankly loved it. Before shelling out on a full Rift or maybe the Vive i found a company that rents the Rift & Vive and was going to have a play over a weekend. Its £108 for the weekend but im seeing the DK2 on ebay for £115(ish)

Is the difference between the Rift and the DK2 so great that if i bought a DK2 it wouldn't give me a true idea of the rift?

Just thinking Value for money on the try before i buy on the Oculus, has anyone upgraded from a DM2 to full rift?

Also im not against the Vive if anyone has tried both i'd like to hear some feedback

108 quid to rent is just dead money. Personally i would forget that!

is there no way you can find someone local to let you try their vive/rift?

i had both DK2 and CV1. CV1 is nicer in every respect - apart from godrays - but i would say they are close enough to give you a fair idea. nice price too at £115, my worry would be, all promises are off now for DK2.

as of the end of last year DK2 is officially deprecated and oculus have said they offer no support now if new sdk updates break compatibility

If London isn't too big a Trek for you Harrods had an Oculus rift with touch demo area when I was there a couple of weeks back. Expect it is still there. That rental price seems way over the top!

These are all great, as is the Harrods suggestion, but you won't get to try Elite.

Of course, but is it worth it for £108, given that that will be on top of the cost of a CV1 if he decides to get a brand new one which, let's be honest, he probably will once he's tried it :) I guess only the OP can decide that.

Thanks for all the replies guys

£108 is a bit strong but i figured that was better the £500 and not being able to buy and return hence the DM2 option but as the reply says if teh update brinks it it still dead money. I work in london so harrods is no big deal. Game had been advertising demos at their store but went i went into the store in croydon they didnt have, never did the demos and went on about there was a lawsuit, money owed etc etc.....

I wanted to rent specifically so that i could try it with Elite, £108 for the Rift & £144 for the Vive. im still looking to see if anywhere else is doing them.

John Lewis apparently do them, might have to pop down there and see if i can have a look, see what there returns policy is, i figure a weekend will be enough for me to know if its for me so i can get it back to them straight away

i cant comment on the vive, but for me personally Elite alone makes the rift worth the money. I will never go back to a monitor for it

Assetto corsa, pcars, ETS2, Dirt Rally, sub nautica, Doom 3 bfg mod, and a shed load more are just the cherry on the icing on the cake. (only mentioned non touch games)

you get some freebie games too which are good, and also the xbox 1 pad is not too shabby either, or pull back 30 quid + if you do not need it.

Same as you. Since buying a Rift in September I've played on monitors for about 10 mins. It was unbelievable naff by comparison we I tried it.

Elite is mostly what I use it for but at some point I intend to buy touch. I only really play ED at weekends and I still get excited of a Friday because I'm going to be in my spaceship later!

John Lewis on Oxford St were indeed doing Oculus demos. In fact I wrote about my experience with them when it first came out ..

I work in London but alas my Oculus is back home in Hertfordshire. That said you're still welcome to pop round and try it for half an hour if you don't mind travelling a bit.

Ive just got the rift and I love it. But it aint cheap and you'll end up shelling out for graphics cards and other odds and sods. I cannot see how I would ever use my screen again. Its awesome. You will love it, but a 1080gtx imo is min gpu. My cpu doesnt seem overly stressed. i5 6600k o/c to 4.5Ghz and 16Gb ram and 1080GTX. Ive not clocked the gpu yet. I seem to get good fps on 1.75HMD and 1.5SS with only stations giving me a drop off. You will also need plenty of usb3.0 slots. Fortunately my Krait mobo has loads.

Ive not used it much if I am honest as I am having an elite lull. I get these urges to read sometimes and I have to satisfy that urge. So Im in my reading phase. But this suits me as I train my brain as your brain can somersault in your skull sometimes. So just an hour for me atm. Then back to book. The weirdy motion bit is wearing off. :)

If you live in London and don't mind travelling to Sutton you can come to try it at my place one of those days, preferably during the weekend. Let me know.

I ran Elite on the DK2 and now that it's been release I play on my CV1. Personally I believe Elite is the only game that truly utilises VR correctly and makes it worth the money you shell out for the CV1, yes games are getting better now but there has been nothing quite like Elite that's come close. If I where you I wouldn't waste any time, get yourself the CV1 :)
