Oculus Software installs to a fixed path?! (My Windows is on H:)

So it turns out that the Oculus Software will only install to C: and there is no way to change the path.

My Windows install is on H:

You can use symlinks to get around that until they fix it (Oculus hinted of a april patch)
It takes some cmd commands to make it happen. But it basically creates a "virtual" folder on the
c:\ drive that stores the content on another drive.

Oculus installs its software on the default location for "Program Files".
You can achieve installing the Oculus Software and any games with the software to a different drive by using one of the following methods.

  1. Symbolic Links - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/
    a. If you already installed Oculus, move the folder in the default install directory and create symbolic link for the folder.
    i. Run command prompt as admin
    ii. run following command

mklink /J "C:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus" "<directory of where you moved the oculus folder>"

iii. The quotes are necessary if there are spaces in the path to the directory
b. If you have not installed oculus yet, you can run the symbolic link command prior to the install and Oculus will then install the files to the new location
i. Create the new folder location for the Oculus directory

  1. A more permanent way to change ALL your Program Files installs is to modify the registry for the default location. (Use at your own risk, I have not had any issues with this method)
If you modify this in the registry and restart your computer, you will be able to install games on a different drive as almost all software installs still use a variable to find your default Program Files location. You would have to reinstall any applications that you would want in your new location.
Follow the procedure here http://windowsreport.com/change-program-files-location-windows-8-10/

Brilliant! Thanks for this.

It seems a very strange thing for Oculus to have done. But at least there is a way around it. :)

Yeah, one of the frustrations some people have been reporting in various reviews, apparently games are also forced installed on main drive....though they have said that oculus is aware and working on a fix.

Well that's gonna be fun. My C drive is only 128gb and is already nearly full. :D

Thank you. :)

If you get errors with the above, only moving the "c:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus\Software" folder works better.

So this is a example where you move it to a bigger D: drive

1.Make a new folder on you big drive, lets say d:\oculus\software
2.Copy the content of the "c:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus\Software" folder to your new d: folder (red above)
3.Now rename the original folder (blue above) to something else, or just delete it.
4.Make the link with "mklink /J "c:\Program Files (x86)\Oculus\Software" d:\oculus\software"
5.Startup Oculus home and install a game and see if it actually goes to the new folder. It may take some time
for it to show, since it still downloads the files to you c: drive, then installs it to d:, and then removes it from c:

I've not bothered too much about Oculus Home. My DK2 developed faulty HDMI cable syndrome and I've had to replace it with an annoying thick cable which I'm tolerating for Elite. I'll buy games when my CV1 eventually arrives.

Saying that, I'm still interested to know if we are any further forward ahead with this problem. Can we now install any place we want yet?

Yes, there was a patch. You can now install to your drive of choice.

Confirmed.

I uninstalled Oculus Home from my C: and reinstalled it to a different drive. It will only let you choose a drive, not a user defined path. Mine was D:\Oculus. All downloads however are then put on this drive path with no option to deviate.

It works but is a touch inflexible. But it's caused me no issues.

Just use steam mover.... leaves a shortcut to the install folder in the original location and moves all the content to wherever you want it. Works with everything else i dont see why it wouldn't work with this.
