Odd - kill pirate missions twice changed to abandon mission

I took two kill pirate missions. Both ended up meeting some random npc who said abandon the mission, we pay you for it. I go back where I got the mission and voila, I get the 12k for the original mission and another 1k on top for abandoning it. Twice this happened in a row.

Is this a bug or feature? All I wanted to do was go shoot something.

You can still hunt pirates and complete the mission as normal. You're just given the option not to.

I wondered if it was bugged, as I didn't expect to get the original amount of credits as if I killed them, as well as extra on top.

If you don't abandon, you can carry on with the mission and eliminate your target. For now, your target is still alive and on the prowl, and what will the organisation that gave you the mission to assassinate that target say when they realise that you've lied to them when you handed in the mission and told them the target is dead?
