Oddball Animals Appreciation Post

Y'all, while uploading pics into my Google drive for the Animal PFP thread, I've just been reminded of the oddball animals we've gotten over the years to complement our stars.

I wanna make this thread to show how awesome and important these animals are.

So, what are y'all's favorite oddballs? Why? Any other odd all's that you'd like?

In my case, I love the peccary and the skunk. Both are just so out there in the big scheme of things. Animals in zoos, but not the 1st people would think of. I just find the models really nice, too.
And I love skunks. I've seen them in the wild, I've been sprayed by them, but they are so adorable and French (OG Pepe le Pew is still the best)

I wouldn't consider the peccary an oddball personally. It was fairly requested, people even expected it for the so desert pack and it was discussed a lot wether we would/should get the peccary or the wild boar or which would come first. It is also a common zoo animal i believe. And a very common animal in the Americas.

But i don't know what do you consider an oddball in PZ. For me are those animals that no one were expecting or very few people asked for, are niche, not very well known or that were included in a pack but there were better more popular options that were left out instead of it.

For example the quokka, nile lechwe, proboscis monkey, arctic wolf, Cuvier's dwarf caiman, skunk, etc.

Out of those my favorite is the quokka. I've always liked quokkas ever since i learn about them. I was kind of obssesed with them in ZT2 moding times, i remember being so happy when the mod came out for them. In Planet Zoo they are so cute and tiny and fun to watch. They are a nice filler animal, and another good animal for walkthrough habitats. They even have a little guest interaction animation i believe.

  • I love the Thomson's gazelle. They are cool, and one of the basics I used a lot in ZT2. There, they were great for release to the wild fame.
  • The arctic wolf is one of my favorite animals in the game, period.
  • I like the llama's color morphs. Honestly, the entire SA pack seems like it should/could have been base game. Nothing seems too "odd."
  • While the dingo is not as essential as other animals from Australia, I really don't think they were as bad of a choice as they were made out to be. Again, this whole pack should/could have been base game.
  • The dwarf caiman is kind of cute, I suppose, but not as necessary as some other picks.
  • I'm so unfamiliar with SEA fauna that most of this pack except for maybe the clouded leopard and Malayan tapir seemed like oddballs to me. Most of the choices aren't bad, especially now that we have gibbons and the ASCO. Binturongs are awesome.
  • While it comes in second behind the white rhino for me, I think the African penguin is one of many people's favorite animals in the game. Does it count as an oddball?
  • While I do think there were better choices than the arctic fox, I like the color morph and it is a good quality animal. It's good to have a little on for arctic sections.
  • I don't feel like the Europe pack had oddballs, but it was missing a swan.
  • Most of the wetlands pack felt like oddball picks to me. The platypuses were an unexpected gem. The Nile lechwes and water buffalo are ok, and the spectacled caiman is my favorite crocodilian in the game. It actually would have been in my top 50 requested animals post-launch.
  • The Scimitar horned oryx doesn't feel that odd, and it has a good conservation story.
  • Striped skunks were one of my most wanted oddballs. They are iconic, taxonomically unique musteloids, and popular overseas. They are a good tiny woodlands animal.
  • The striped hyena and blue wildebeest felt like good updates to base-game animals although there might have been better choices, especially for the latter.
  • The Asian water monitor felt deeply unnecessary to me, but it looks awesome.
  • The dama gazelle would have been nicer in a different pack.
  • The quokka is a great pick, but I still miss my tree kangaroo. Hopefully, we will have both.
In a nutshell, I like most of the "oddball" animals. Sometimes I get a little impatient waiting for my favorites and other necessary additions, but they mostly make nice contributions to the game.

Can anyone confirm the guest interaction? And what is it like? Now I am considering keeping them as Walkthrough.

It had better be yeeting its babies. I know that's not really factually accurate as to what happens but it's also one of the things the Quokka is known for (the other being its ever present goofy looking smile)

Oddballs though...agree on the Skunk as well. I mean, for us in the states it's a common animal, so not really odd but it is odd for inclusion in a zoo game.

Nile Lechwe...I actually had to look it up because I had no idea what it was at all. I was picturing some kind of reptile to be honest. Turns out I think they're pretty cool.

I agree, but I feel like it was really only known about here more than other places. I mean, to put it bluntly, I've heard about peccaries before I knew they were peccaries. I had thought that these animals were pigs, so that's why I considered them oddballs, because in general they would fly under most people's radars

Platypus, the definition of odd. Or if the meaning of oddball in this context is lesser requested than probably the Striped Hyena and Somali Wild Donkey - I was not expected to see those two so I was really pleasantly surprised.

Two words! Much shagginess! Two landmasses! One continent! Many insect meals... Two cubs (sometimes...)
ONE ANIMAL!
The adorable...
Sloth Bear! :)
