Oddness in Eravate?

Well before I begin I must add that being fairly new to the game this could be 'lack of experience' rather than 'oddness'.

I have been out exploring for a few days or so, getting a bit bored with it too so I decide to come back to 'civilization' and choose to head back to Eravate. No big reason, it's known to me and by then only about 20 or so jumps to get there. I decide to sell all I'm carrying before I arrive and get all repairs done and then a few jumps later I'm in Eravate. I punch in for Cleve Hub and keep my eyes open for close company. Half way to Cleve I get interdicted so I shut off engines and spool up weapons as I have no cargo. Oh, no targets. I scan but still nothing. I jump back into cruise, nothing. So what the hell happened? Did someone jump me and then thought maybe he had bitten off more than he could chew and pulled the plug? Can you even do it that quick?
I have never seen this before. Anyway, more yet.

I then continue to Cleve where I reconfigure my ship from exploration for more local 'work' and set of to the nav point to try everything out - I have been caught more than once deploying hard points to find out I have no power. :( .
Yep, everything seems to work but the nav point is fairly quiet, just two or three players in Sideys and Eagles plus an Anaconda NPC who seems to love me so much he spends most of the time trying to ram me to death. Several 'wanted' NPC jump in but as the other players look like they are really new to the game I don't put much effort into the kills and let them take the prizes.
Then, a wing of FIVE NPC's jump in. Now I have seen threes but not fives and I start to scan them, I scan two which are Dropships or similar, this is a BIG wing of the likes I have not seen before so thinking I have it wrong and these are players, not NPCs I begin scanning the others, too late I'm being attacked. Something else I have not seen before.

I try to help out and attack one of the gunships but my shields are down and something behind me is ripping my backside off so I boost out and turn and try to get some distance. Reconfigure to get shields back up and then notice one of the ships has broken off the wing to follow me, the one I gave a kicking to - and though I took his shields offline he can still tear me to bits. All this seemed new to me, the big wing, an NPC getting so angry he followed me, I began to wonder. Once my shields were up I turned and scanned the Gunship and boosted past him but it was not registered as a player ship.
Exciting stuff but when I eventually shook him off I returned to Cleve and started to think about what had happened. I have seen nothing about changes being made within the game and to be honest if this was going to be regular, what chance would those new players have up against such a wing?

Have I got this wrong? Did the missus put something in my last cup of coffee? or was this something more nefarious like the things that have stopped me playing many other games?

Answers on a postcard to..........

In my limited experience I can only say 2 thigs I am certain of - NPCs icons on radar are solid blocks, player icons are hollow + player (and only players) have "CMDR" prefix to their name. So... it sounds like it was NPC wing. Big npc wings happen sometimes.

I concur, that's what I always thought but usually, boosting out of range and then returning causes NPCs to forget you and worry about more pressing targets. This wasn't the case here. Maybe FD have tweeked something, but then again, maybe not. :)

EDIT: Yeah, after reading another post it seems NPCs are getting meaner. I need a new trade. *gulp*

:D Sounds like fun! Stronger AI is something to be welcomed, I think. I've always resisted farming kills and credits at RESs; stupid as mud 'condas spinning in place and similar sights irritate me, even although they make for an easy pay out. If FD have tweaked NPC skill up a notch or three I'll be a very happy bunny.

"what chance would those new players have up against such a wing " is a good question. My advice would be boost, boost, boost, but actually getting that advice to a new player is problematic. Having said that, I think most players will figure it out pretty quickly. It might even appeal to new players- a lot of gamers like challenge and having tough AI, with a player community known to be even tougher may give ED a bit of a boost in some circles. Bragging rights, if you like. [hotas]

Who knows what is around the corner in this game? That's why it's Elite:Dangerous. I generally fly a fully tooled up Corv,Cutter or Annie, but still occasionally find that the odds are way against me and have to flee. Pick your fights carefully.

And take note of what's been said above. Spot players at a glance on your scanner, Beware of hollow shapes. Also, you may not be aware that rectangles mean guns holstered and triangles mean guns drawn. :)

Yeah I only recently worked out the symbol square triangle thing.

I have to admit, though I was on to a loser it was good fun and for the first time in the game I felt like there was a real threat. The Asp isn't the ship to take on the big boys though.

I'm still wondering about the 'ghost ship' interdiction however.

When I started out, I would never start a fight in my Sidewinder. I would follow the big Wanted NPC (Non Player Character) ships around and wait for them to be attacked and softened up. Then, just before the end I would steal the kill from the other NPCs. Don't ever steal a kill from a player though. It doesn't go down very well.

I kept this up until I had enough for a Vulture. Now I don't wait and take on Elite Anacondas. If they are in wings, I wait until something distracts them, or splits them up before attacking and yes; I have been followed out of the area when boosting out to re-charge shields.

Best of luck. ;)
