Odysse question:

I'm courious as to just how much my thousand's and thosand's of hour's of playing in Horizon will or would be altered if I were to install Odyssey.

For instance: Do I maintain all my stuff, such as Bookmarks, ships, engineering...

Can I continue doing the mission's I prefer and have been doing such as hauling passenger, cargo, to various stations?

I've watched a number of video's and it seems to be WAY to much pew pew envolved outside of one ship while walking around.
And I really don't desire to get envolved with ground pew pew, when I've just recently started doing a bit of space pew pew.

Essentially you keep your Horizons progress. Some things may have been changed between Horizons, like Dav's Hope may have moved, as well as other farming spots changed.

You can continue with the missions that you prefer. The videos may show a bias towards exciting pew pew on the ground, but you do not have do do much if you want to avoid it. Many Odyssey ground missions are not shooting orientated. Indeed, for some the mission fails if the alarm is raised.

But honestly, you can get by doing ground work without participating in combat if you wish.

When I'm not in the mood for combat, I'll take a handful or more of ground transport missions and use an Apex taxi in order to collect mats from the mission rewards.

And since Apex is flying for me, I can do some other stuff, housework, personal finance, etc...while I'm waiting to arrive at the next location. I basically only spend a few minutes doing stuff in game from the time I land until I get picked up again to go to the next mission location.

I think the OP is more interested in space missions than Oddity content so yes, you can bypass it completely and still do your space missions that you like doing. Tbh framerates are much better in Horizons, especially on planets so i'd stick with that until Oddity is on offer. I'm not a fan of it, plenty that are

All of your Horizons progress is available in Ody, ships, engineering, materials, bookmarks, friends, PGs, ranks, funds, carrier etc. I switch back and forth frequetnly.

You also choose which DLC level to play at for any particular session. If you log into Horizons after playing Odyssey, ody content (such as the extra ranks, the Scorpion SRV etc) will not be available whilst in Horizons. You can switch back and forth as you please, just by relogging via the launcher. I've not had any open missions when I've done such a re-log and would be wary of re-logging whilst missions are open.

As mentioned above, the new planetary tech changes how worlds are rendered, and their surface features. As a result well known landmarks may not be there and surface installations might have been relocated. There are also changes such as Biological sites in horizons not transferring in the same way to Ody - In Ody for exampe, the shard sites have the same materials available from plants sparsely covering large areas rather then the concentrated styes in Horizons.

It sounds as if my play preferences match yours to a degree. I have zero interest in on-foot combat. I will still log into Odyssey instead of Horizons for normal cargo mission (and the like) instead of logging into Horizons.

Crime and punishment vary as well - I'm not confident to sing out the changes as my commanders a good boys. They rarely fall foul of the law.

I switch platforms all of the time as my Terekhov and Mattlingly accounts are both fuel rats ,and rescue mainly on Horizons but do other gameplay on Ody.

Be aware that in Ody Galaxy map can lose or corrupt filter settings when you log out or nose around the settings, and Fastest route/Economical route is not properly initialised until you select it after login. So Set Fastest route each time you log ina d if scooping, ensue thet the star class filter is fully set up including the "Apply filter to route" setting. I performed a fuel rescue earlier today where I think the unfortunate commander did not re-check their star class filter and had a run of brown dwarfs.

Just wondering about this kinda thing as i'm unsure about switching to a new pc and upgrading to Ody whilst i'm at it. Are the Elite files on my old system required on the new system - ie, do I need to transfer the existing Elite (Horizons) folders/logs etc etc from one to the other? Or just download ED Ody (to new system) and all will be well? Games I can handle, but this 'under the hood' geek stuff is a bit out of my zone. (No offence to you Geeks out there - without you, we wouldn;t have gaming systems......lol)

You're probably better off making sure Horizons works on the new PC before upgrading to Odyssey - any troubleshooting that you need to do is much simpler since there is one less thing that could have caused any issue.

Regarding transferring files - whilst it is possible to save the extra dowload by copying the actual game files to the new computer it can be a bit tricky and the actual method depends on which install you have (FD, Steam, Epic) so as long as you have a decent download speed you are probably better off reinstalling from scratch. Once you have the game files installed then you can copy over your log files bind files etc so that you don't lose anything. (The game will retain all of your progress, ranks, ships, stocks etc since that is stored online by FD, but certain things like visited stars and a more detailed history are not)

Depends. As long as you are "only" playing the game and don't want to use specific geekish features, all you need is to log into your FD account on your new PC and start downloading.

What is stored on your PC:
  • control bindings
  • visisted stars (there are a few external toosl taht can use this log)
  • your CMDRs log files (again, useful to tools like EDDiscovery. If you don't copy them over, the tools on your PC won't know any of your CMDR's history from before the move. External sites like INARA or EDSM will keep whatever you already uploaded, though)

For the bindings, scroll up to the pinned thread at the top of this forum. For logs and visited stars, give a shout if you need the location - someone will answer.

bindings:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

(there are other options folders - graphics and audio mainly - the others are unimportant and get created automatically)

no idea where visited stars are held

Thanx Bravo17, esp the advice about transfering the BInd/Log files.
