Odyssey and Horizons compatibility.

I started playing ED: Odyssey recently and my friend and I are planning to gather forces and play together. I read old threads about ED Odyssey and Horizons not being able to share the same instance, so my friend on Horizons will not find me because I am on a different version of the game.

Is this correct, I cannot play with him with the Odyssey enabled? I would have to change game versions to be able to reach him?

Correct, Odyssey and Horizon use separate servers.
In your launcher, you should have the option (in "Versions" I think) to either use Odyssey or Horizon.

Try to convince your friends to upgrade...I recall paying $12 for Odyssey, and it comes with so many good things (some could even be considered "pay2win"...)

Odyssey and Horizons 4.0 are the same servers and the same game client just swapped in the launcher as it impact what you can and can't see be allowed to see happen due to age ratings.
Horizons 3.8 is legacy and that's a completely different server farm and game client.

The friend will be in horizons 4.0 and you'll need to swap over to horizons yourself in the launcher to play with them. No additional downloads required but they used the nuclear option to ensure that horizons could maintain it's age rating when odyssey failed to get the same rating.

My, learning new things every day... I'd have never thought about that.

Yes, I read some posts talking about that... Since Odyssey have agression to NPCs and stuff like that, the age rating of Odyssey is different from Horizons. They cant be the "same game" due to this age rating I guess.
