Odyssey - Exploration very Unfriendly

I too rely on swift and efficient use of both Galaxy Map and especially System Map.

With the current Alpha 3 System Map, I'm sure not much of this would have happened.
Fighting User Interfaces to get relevant Information many thousands times over simply is not an Option. Not for a task that - by design - must be repeated so incredibly often.

The whole issue (unneeded and drastic paradigm shift in terms of UI changes, breaking with 6 years of successful Interfacing standards) reminds of me the Windows 8.0 GUI disaster.

I think the galmap problems are at least on FDev's radar now. And with the juicer mini-game going away, things are improving. Right now I'm looking forward to exploring in Odyssey, but I'll also be stuck in the bubble for a while upgrading the suits.

The irony is that I've been strictly a VR-only player, and in fact it was VR that got me started playing ED quite a lot.... and now with the first person stuff being added, and the performance not as good, and so on... I may be giving up VR for at least a while.

Are suite upgrades necessary for explorers?

Probably not. I suspect the available upgrades will be things like extended power or oxygen supplies, maybe improved running speed or jetpack energy. Also possibly improved scan speed on the genetic tool. In all of those cases they would sound "nice" but not "necessary".

was really on long time vacation, last flight, i think, was somwhere after krait phantom relase. And now going to return in odyssey. Can anyone explain - do i need to prepare somtheing before Odyssey relase for mostly exploration? Or there will be no improvement on ship's exploration configs? What i have now for exploration - https://s.orbis.zone/eggs phantom and
https://s.orbis.zone/egg- old ASP
will it be still good in DLC or no?

Yeah, that should still be fine. There's a nicer FSD available from the tech brokers now, and that would get you maybe another 5 lightyears, but totally optional of course. And that's available now, not an Odyssey thing. Otherwise Odyssey probably won't change much for ship builds. However you might need to visit a station to pick up the new exploration space suit, if you want to use the hand-scanner on surface life. But that too is optional.

Doesn anyone know, will have fleetcarriers an option to sell bioscan data? Or will a deepspace explorer stay will all data he has until he hads back to bubble?

Right now it looks like you have to go to a real station to sell the bio data. It's possibly that might change at some point, but at least in the Alpha currently there's no way to sell it at a carrier.

I'm just now looking at this thread to see what everyone thought of exploration in EDO. I think I'm bummed out now.
I'm on console, so I have a while before I get to walk about on planets. Now I wonder if they'll make those map selection changes to Horizons, or if those issues will be isolated to EDO. Sounds frustrating.

The map is a total mess, but they got lots of feedback on it, and were fixing some of the more egregious omissions, so we'll see how that turns out. They're also removing the mini-game on the genetic sampler, and will make that work differently.

Otherwise exploration will be fine, and I'm looking forward to exploring some of these planet surfaces and new biologicals. It's just the maps that I'm worried about.

Agree. I am very much looking forward to the new planetary tech. They heard the feedback and have taken step to correct the biggest issues. Hopefully they will continue because there is still work for them to do...

As someone who started playing this game mostly for exploration (with some trading and ship combat thrown in) I really wonder if I'm just atypical or if Frontier doesn't understand their customers.

I can't believe I'm the only player who also spends a lot of time playing X3 (or X4...but I'm still on X3), Kerbal Space Program, NMS, etc. Again, I can only speak for myself, but I would think appealing to people who like those types of games is a better idea than appealing to people who play Call of Duty, etc. I don't mind some FPS (NMS for example... and I did enjou the first Mass effect as well), but this entire add-on basically seems to mostly focus on FPS missions that you can do to grind for better FPS gear..... meh - no thanks.

Maybe I'm totally wrong .... I dunno, but I don't think space flight is just some tiny niche - Kerbal Space Program... .which is far more of a complex simulator and is pretty much only about exploration has made like zillions and zillions of dollars.

Personally I would have much rather seen them flesh out SRVs, ground exploration/science and maybe stuff like surface mining. You could have different SRV models (maybe even customizable).... surface sampling, etc. I think that would have been really well received and could have been developed much faster for a fraction of the cost.

I think there's a lot of this. I also get the impression that no one there actually plays Elite. At least not the way the rest of us do. If they had anyone actually spending time fine-tuning their ships (and thus using the Outfitting frequently), or travelling any significant distance, they would have been aware of how much more awkward and complicated the new UI systems are. This leads me to believe they only use pre-built ships and teleport around with the dev console.

I'm with you on this. SRV seems an abandoned feature right from the start. The point that it even has amodel name (Scarab) suggest that at least some variability was expectable. I wouldn't say full module customization like in a ship, but at least a range of 3 different SRVs with different cargo hold / speed / resistance was reasonable.

Pretty much agree and something that has become more apparent over the last few updates. The FC update also arrived in a most unappealing fashion and Fdev once more become reactive to their own strangle myopic view of playing Elite. Here we are once more in same situation with players wondering how the developers came to believe the current mess that is the user interface is in any real way fit for purpose. Hell forget exploring, even basics such as swapping modules and selecting ships has become tedious.
Though to be honest without Reshade helping with the HDR nightmare I don't think I'd have been able to see anything at all. It seems likely I'll return to Horizon for now just for the sake of my eyes.

FDev should have a few players of each type (explorers, traders, miners, fighters, whatever) working with them to weed out all the nonsense creativity that comes from illuminated minds, before putting out products touted as finished... and help with bug hunting, usability, etc., because players will inevitably push the boundaries further than any casual inhouse testers

maybe it wont last long and we will be able to mount tanks to our ships. it would be perfect idea for sick FPS ED: Oddyssey
