Odyssey Looks Good

Hi,

Looking forward to this expansion will be putting in a pre-order. I played Elite 1 & 2 (Frontier), Novagen Mercenary, Damocles - Mercenary 2 & Mercenary 3. Looks like ED will be challenging all those games. Frontier had rich planets which ED Horizons didn't. I preferred ED non Newtonian flight controls but didn't like the fact it didn't have the rich varied planets to explore like Frontier & the Mercenary series https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercenary_(video_game). I'm nit expecting planets like Earth crafted as they were in Frontier i.e. you could go and see what the time was on Big Ben in London but it's fleshing out the game. Hopefully there will be missions involving planets, space stations, exploration etc...

Thanks
Haider

Agreed, Odyssey was the reason I came back to the game in July and since then game has exploded with content, good times!

Exploded with content ay?

To be honest I haven't played for a long while. Last time it was where Elite was on Commodore 64/Atari ST. I then got over to Lave where there are more human players and became more interesting.

On the content front, Frontier need to improve the player to player comms system. So players can buddy up in the game world to do stuff. Players could then create their own story and content - money or your life highway robbery, or organise a trade run to a dangerous planet with fighter escort etc... That will lead to a living breathing universe. I did a few missions. Thought it would be interesting if the missions could be a part of programme of missions leading to an outcome for the client. May be players should be able to create missions for each other. Horizons came out but the planets weren't really anything like what they had on Elite 2 - Frontier. This is a step in the right direction.

I suppose it comes down to budget. SC took a lot of the money from potential purchasers of Elite Dangerous based on promises, fancy artwork and graphical videos. I'm not against CI games or Chris Roberts, having played Wing Commander, and will purchase when they have something interesting. It's just they gave a tentative release date and then not even be anywhere near close to it gives a bad name to themselves and other Kickstarters. From what I hear it is suffering the same sense of 'emptiness' and lack of depth. I have also been told don't expect a GTX1080 to give you approx 60fps at 1080P...

I think we tend to look at Frontier Elite 2 with rose tinted glasses (myself included) the 'atmospheric' planets had less polygons than a bobble-head in ED and less to do. Its amazing what a blue sky and some curved Bézier clouds used to do to the imagination. I do miss launching from "London" or "New York" or that moon base on disk 2.

Did you know, Frontier didn't even have a working asteroid mining game loop?

We're older and so is computer gaming so we expect more. I played Star Wars Squadrons, thought this would have been a good game circa 2000 now the capital ships look very small, no head tracking...I used to love playing Pac-Man and Space Invaders

I think Odyssey is going to be at least as big of a leap ahead as when Horizons was first released back in 2015. Very looking forward to finally seeing some life in the galaxy, and especially feeling like an actual person living in the golden age of space colonization, trying to make a living, instead of just a wandering vehicle.

Even the simplest of things, like getting back from a long exploration tour (or stopping at some remote asteroid station for a small rest from the black), or simply relaxing a bit on the station of an active CG will feel miles better.

Nice, I remember Mercenary too. Now, if only we can get better black holes in ED so we can trick opponents into them, like we did with the Berzerker in Warhead.

Yes, this is true. There's just something about it, beyond the game mechanics, just one of the best games ever.

Along with the 84 original, and Exile on BBC.

Why pre-order? Is there any added benefit over just purchasing and downloading when you are ready to?

Nothing against Frontier, I just don't understand pre-orders anymore. Sure, pre-ordering Ocarina of Time got me the gold cartridge and ensured I could play it when it came out or at least whenever I could get to EB Games and pick it up.

Anyway...I too am looking forward to Odyssey. I'm just hopeful there are some synergistic updates to older features and that Odyssey doesn't stand too much on its own.
