Odyssey or Horizons - Advice Please

Am I better playing in Horizons than Odyssey whilst in VR if I never use the on foot aspect?

I prefer the UI in Odyssey to Horizons but would prefer better a better VR experience if I can.

My system specs are Ryzen 5-3600, 32GB Ram, 2070 Super and a HP G2.

Thanks for any advice.

The Odyssey VR experience is non-existent for the on-foot stuff, but if you want the ultimate VR experience, you'd have Odyssey for the overall improvements to the game, the ship, SRV, interface, etc, then just never put your boots on the ground. Sadly, that piece of the game is significant, so its hard to ignore. I just posted this to sum up my frustrations with the current situation: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...-implementation-is-beyond-frustrating.599220/

Well, as a player that plays ED exclusively in VR, I must say that I play in Odyssey only. When Odyssey came out, it was in some kind of pre-alpha state. It was utterly ugly and almost non-working. After almost a year it came almost to the state of Horizons. I played Horizons on GTX1060 and it was absolutely smooth. Now I have RTX3060 and it is NOT as smooth as Horizons was on may old graphics card. Still, when I am out in the black, it runs smoothly without problems. Stations and settlements were abhorrent when it comes to frames per second, but I have left he bubble around summer (and I am still in the northern part of the galaxy) so maybe it was fixed to usable levels. Well I just hope. It would take me probably several more months to get back to chek it. All in all, the planets are much nicer in Odyssey - kinda more realistic and a teeeny bit less generic looking.
The exobiology is a nice distraction while traveling. At least when you get used to the smack on the face the FDEV did when you switch to on-foot "experience" in VR.

I'm torn. I don't care for the (mostly shooty) on foot gameplay at all. I don't. I tried it, it gives me... nothing. I've done a handful low CZs in pancake and visited a few settlements, but... meh. I like to fly spaceships. Or, once in a while, whiz around in the SRV. If the terrain and my stomach allow it :) .

I too have a G2, I play on a 5900X with 32 GB and a 2080 Super @ 40% (!), and Odyssey still performs terrible at times, especially near settlements, inside starports and Haz Res sites (there are G2 VR players out there that claimed in the past it runs wonderfully for them, but closer inspection reveals that they were content with 30 fps and so on...). Everytime I switch my main back to Horizons (and my main has no real reason to play Odyssey, as he never leaves the pilot seat. Ever.) I remember how nice it runs.

There are a few quality of life improvements in Odyssey that I miss in Horizons, though - the shield percentage being the most important one. But if you are just in space and never get out... Horizons all the way.

And still I recently bought Odyssey for my free Epic alt. Made a largeish detour to get him a basic Artemis suit, too. He is out in the black between Colonia and Sag A*, and driving around on a nice atmospheric planet is just... pretty. I can't get enough of that.

I’ve been playing Odyssey in VR pretty much since launch, with dreadful performance early on, and still poorer performance than Horizons (but I’m extremely tolerant of low fps,) and love so much of it despite the obvious issues - although at this point I should admit I’m not one for on foot shooting games, beyond doing some on-monitor stuff to get suits and upgrades whilst checking it all out I’m back to Horizons style play within Odyssey for the most part.

At the moment I’m back playing Horizons, as I recently reset an Alt account that only has Horizons, and I’m loving the smoother VR performance and lack of Odyssey-shimmer. However, there are still the wonderful sights, UI that I’ve grown to enjoy more and additional gameplay if I ever want to dip into it, that Odyssey provides and I do miss that when in Horizons.

It really is a very subjective and personal choice between the two at the moment for VR users. I’ve found it interesting that despite coming very close to upgrading the Horizons only account a few times I’ve still held off - possibly the idea of getting the lighting, planet tech and so on in the future is enough to put me off.

I can’t give you an answer beyond the fact that, currently, you can at least switch between the two if you have Odyysey…maybe that’s the answer depending on your mood when playing.

Only VR player here, I wanted to like Odyssey but the performance is just not a good as in Horizons.
I have found the lighting in Odyssey to be problematic and very dark at times and had to switch back to Horizons.
So for now I only fly in Horizons till Odyssey performance is improved.

definitely needs better hardware to run odyssey that horizons but if you have the rig to run it then odyssey is better over all imo
I hope they get to the bottom of the issues as having the playerbase fragmented accross the 2 games isn't ideal..... not that it affects me much as sadly none of my mates are playing at the moment but will be better for the game when they are united.
