Odyssey Progression - anything known?

So this new loot cycle. Anything known about it?

Is it gonna be "mild upgrades" - nollocks like they fed us last time and then we got the powercreep enema? Or is it just ugly cosmetics this time?

Because, I'd like to know beforehand this time.

Also:
Is it gonna be complete release or do we get the surprise nollocks just like last time after we parted with the money?

My understanding is that it will be cheap (credits) to buy things like suits and weapons, and then upgrading will be more like engineering and maybe using tech brokers. Speculation, maybe some of the current materials will be re-used, but I wouldn't be surprised if we need an entirely new list of materials to engineer Odyssey stuff. Stuff that you get from on-foot salvaging and settlement gameplay.

Allegedly a "new currency" will fit in there somehow, and maybe that's just referring to all of the new materials you'll be gathering. Quite a stink was raised about it a few months ago, but as long as it doesn't cost more credits than a SRV to buy a suit, and we haven't resorted to bartering for basic models of suits and weapons, I'll be happy.

I'll let you know as soon as the alpha includes engineering...

FDev have already mentioned there will be a new set of Engineers for the new toys so I imagine it'll be similar to what we already have for Ships and Modules.

Money to buy Weapons, Suits, Modules. Mats for upgrading them. They've already got all the necessary mechanic in game so I'm guessing they just re-jig them a bit for the new gear.

Pure speculation of course.

The same delta in performance vanilla - engineer, though.

Sounds like it's going to be very similar to now. Very affortable base models, very customisable, very firewalled / rare top-end specialisations:

Engineers: [1h21m15s]
  • We can visit the Engineers in game now face to face, and more are being added.
  • New Engis will be primarily about weapon and suit upgrades, modules etc.
  • Can't re-engineer a weapon once altered (?). Need to get a new one.
  • Don't want them to be 'throwaway', to replace with slight increments.
  • They want you to 'love' your gun. Slowly build up the engi modules, tailor it etc.
  • Then outfit another model of the gun for different speciality perhaps etc.
  • And similarly with suits.
  • Says there will be a degree of grind / currency earning / 'playing the game' to earn the mods. But at same time quite keen that entry level to try out the base items is a low barrier. Will be able to try them all early on.

I guess as always the ultimate test of the system is whether the grind has any fun gameplay loops in it.

And whether we can give the Engis a slap when we meet them...

(Spoiler: We can't. Although if I can push one into a furnace I'm doing it ;))

I expect we will see something like "walk 5000 km in any direction to qualify for your invitation to my studio to engineer those worn out boots."

It's almost definitely just materials. The new currency faff was started by one thread title that got out of hand. I don't think fdev have ever said there would be a new currency.

Op, I sincerely hope fdev learned their lessons and the upgrades won't result in insane sponge meta. But they did actually acknowledge this already in one interview following a dev diary. They referenced drawn out ship combat and said fps won't be the same. They referenced examples of the FPS genre and suggested elite won't be at either extreme.

I'd recommend holding off on your preorder though. I'm going to be in Alpha and will happily report back on this, nda allowing.

My biggest hope is fdev totally change the engineer approach with lessons learned, too. If not for ships, at least for this new stuff.

To sum it up:
We don't really know much about it. There is mats and we assume there will be some form of engineering. We hope it's not gonna be as much delta as with spaceships, but that's basically what we were at before the engineers were unleashed.

My understanding is that all the new suits and equipment in Odyssey will be purchasable with credits but will only be available in a dull beige colour. Arx will be required to obtain more interesting hues. Upgrades to suits and equipment will require engineering using new mats such as Lavian Hen's Teeth and Raaxlan Unicorn Dung.
