Odyssey Scam Mission - Really? This is low

I took a mission that I was "requested" to take from a message.

1. I was in my Corvette and was requested to take an "important mission" get salvage items, was bored, I accepted.
2. The items were on land and my corvette does not have a Scarab. I had collector limpets and actually managed to fenagle them to pick up the four items. Most of them (limpets) just crashed into the planet surface. That was annoying but I learned it can be done.
3. I go to deliver the items and of course the land location does not have large landing pads.
4. Keep in mind this mission pays like $170,000 CR. I should not have wasted my time. But I said I would do it so I had my Sidewinder transferred to a nearby Starport. I had not used it in like forever. It only had two cargo slots and I needed four. So fine I bought a hauler or something.... I get to the land location and my ship doesn't go into glide. I try to boost and it doesn't work the first time. I'm like 80km away....

AND THEN!!!!!!!

It says that I need to have ODYSSEY to land at this location!!!!
I DON'T HAVE ODYSSEY!

I was requested in my corvette to deliver items that I was not very capable to pickup but managed. They needed to be delivered to a place that does not have a big enough landing pad for the ship I was in. Fine.

But this was just a frigging advertisement or something to get me to buy Odyssey????? what? Give me a mission I cannot even complete! Waste my time!

This really makes me to never want to play this game again. This is a low blow and the developers should be ashamed!

Oh, it’s definitely ridiculous … just the sheer audacity of it combined with the amusing slow increase in how impossible it became with each step you overcame … I mean, it’s just industrial level trolling on FDevs part, right? 😂

I’m not aware of any other “ads” for Odyssey hiding in plain sight within Horizons but I haven’t loaded the Horizons client for ages so I’m probably not the best authority on it.

I think it's funny that you think Frontier clearly didn't bother (or totally forgot) to update certain missions to make sure there were no Ody/Hor conflicts is some sort of deliberate move. It's waaaaay more likely that someone just didn't do their job properly.
that's pretty sad. I hope you are wrong.
The base of the game is awesome. Just need a little creativity to make the whole game incredible.

Actually sounds like it was one of those in-space messaged missions, makes sense that of all the mission types in the game that would be the most likely overlooked by the devs.

Still. Pretty funny. The scream of 'scam!' is ever funnier.

Odds are I'm way more right than you are. And yeah, we all know how awesome this game could be. With all it's issues it's still pretty awesome.

😂 this is funny! Kudos to you for carrying on trying after all that hassle, I would have ditched the mission at the limpet stage.
Frontier really ought to fix this.

I salut your ingenuity with the limpets and not giving up the moment you realised their was no large landing pad and all that for a mission paying just 170,000 CR! Fdev give this player a copy of Odyssey, we need more commanders like this.

Greetings,

It seems like the Comm text mission hit a destination to an Odyssey atmospheric planet to complete the mission. If not for that it would probably have worked in Horizons. In Horizons doing station ship missions I have never seen this. Still a good post for those Comm text missions to check them out.

Here's some System Map info to check out missions before accepting them.

The half moon blue circle means that a player can land on the planet.
The vertical blue lines means there are stations on the planet.
The blue atmosphere around the lower planet requires Odyssey to land on it.
The upper planet without atmosphere both Odyssey and Horizons can land on it.
In Points of Interest orange stations are Horizons and blue stations are Odyssey.
ALL of this info is in both Horizons and Odyssey.
Also ALL of the Odyssey basic System Map info less war zones is loaded even if the player cannot use it.

Horizons play...
If an Odyssey atmospheric planet you cannot zoom in to see what is there on the System Map.
In non-atmospheric planet you can zoom in to see both orange and blue stations.
In Points of Interest and the left Nav panel you can lock to a blue station and land there.
Upon arrival there will be ship missions. Will it improve your faction status yes but seems redundant in Odyssey.

If other players have more info post it on this thread.

So in Horizons one can land at an Odyssey blue station, run around in an SRV or use the free camera to explore. Other than ship missions and operational landing pads it is a dead station with no NPCs on foot. Everything is there to closely look at. Shoot a flying Sentry well you tell me how that works out. I was in my 60ly jump Asp Explorer not a combat ship researching this.

Odyssey players accepting an on-foot mission to an unknown site could go to Horizons for reconnaissance, develop a strategy and then back to Odyssey to engage.

So the real 'teaser' in Horizons is letting players seeing the awesome bases nothing like in Horizons then thinking they have to get Odyssey. Given two years from now Frontier may legacy Horizons 4.0 like they did 3.8! Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Regards to All

While i understand the problem, i doubt this is a deliberate scam mission.

The reason is that you got this mission from a message yeah?

That happens when you idle somewhere for a while, and these missions use different templates to standard missions (from a board).

Now, over time, changes happen for balance, bugs, whatever, but these never seem to get applied to missions that aren't from mission boards.... i can only presume that it's a part of the game (like so many others) that time forgot.

This particular issue used to happen with standard missions from the boards and got patched... but once again, non-board missions got overlooked.

Not saying this alleviates or changes how frustrating this is, just trying to say i dont think this is a deliberate scam... rather, yet another prime example of the issues that need to get sorted before we get things like Odyssey.

EDIT: Also, context matters. If people just say "FD uses scam missions to get people to buy Odyssey, they're probably going to go "no we don't?"... but if people report bugs about the dynamic mission templates being broken, it's a better chance it'll actually get looked at. There's some great examples in the past of this playing out poorly...

That was your one and only mistake.

Never ever take missions from a message. They'll make you jump through hoops for peanuts. It's not worth your time.

I don't even read them anymore, just delete them on the spot. Honestly, I wish we had a spam filter for those.

Perfect example of what i'm saying above. Balance passes have happened for missions of the same type, but not the template used for message... they're just always forgotten.

Yeah I usually ignore them as well. I keep thinking that this mission invite message system is one day gonna result in something new, interesting, creative and fun.

But to get an Odyssey mission in a game that is not Odyssey is just plain wrong.

As much as that could seem like malice it's 100% just Fdev lack of attention to detail.
The random missions you get offered in space have never verified if they're actually suitable for the player or advised of any requirements and it sounds like you hit most of the oversights all at once. The only thing missing is the 500,000ls distant destination.

I must admit i am torn on this one....

obviously the game should not waste players time by giving you missions you cant complete.

OTOH i hate how segregated the game is, I want the game to feel meshed together as a real "world" and not a series of disconnected mini games..... as such I absolutely want to take on a mission to do one thing, which has the potential to develop wrinkles which may ask me to do something totally different.... in principle as someone who does own the DLC i applaud the fact such things exist.

I definitely do not think this is spite or dodgy marketing on FDs part.

I suppose the answer for me is 1) make these wrinkles potentially very luctrative - possibly with otherwise hard to get material rewards.

2) make the whole rinkle thing odyssey only, so horizons simply dont get them...

that way they are something most players will want to get rather than spam to ignore, and horizons players may get mission envy and want to upgrade without getting missions they cant complete.
