Now that there are on-foot team missions in Odyssey, are there any plans to add matchmaking/groupfinder/group queue function to put a wing of four commanders on a Viper or Vulture, then combat drop them into a settlement to complete a team objective, for instance Protect/Assassinate/Rescue prisoner etc?
Back in the days when I was still playing a game called Warframe, I remember teaming up with random players and drop into a randomized map guns blazing. It was instantly social, fun, and engaging. Very little time and effort were spent looking for people to play. Most of the time spent were actual gun plays, explosions, looting, and adrenaline pumping. That was 2013.
Fast forward to now in 2022, I am having trouble finding people to play team based on foot missions. First, I have to find the "Protect" team mission. Then I need to find teammates, if I can find someone who happen to be in my system, and happen to want to play on foot team mission. Next, I need to invite the person into my team and share the mission. After that, we have to take a shuttle or ship of our choice, and arrive at the settlement where the mission will take place. Finally, we do the team mission for a modest 1.1 million credits reward. I actually spent more time trying to set up a team and getting to the destination than actually playing the mission. Needless to say, I did not enjoy it.
Am I doing it wrong? Or is EDO missing some critical features? I did not expect Elite Dangerous to be a FPS game with multiplayer matchmaking because until Odyssey, it wasn't. Now that team based on foot missions are added, maybe it's reasonable to add that one feature pretty much every FPS game has? I don't mind browsing mission panel, taking a 5 minute shuttle ride, then touch down at a settlement where I finish an assassinate mission in 1 minute when I'm soloing. But when it comes to playing as a team, spending all that time just to play a 10 minute group session, just takes away the all the fun.
I'll stop ranting here and make a few observations. First, the solo on-foot gameplay in EDO is fine as it is. Getting missions, doing missions, and collecting rewards is a simple game loop that I can play at my own pace and enjoy at my own pace. Second, on-foot team missions are not easily accessible. It's hard to find people to form a on-foot strike team and all arrive at the same time. Need group finder function to cut down the time of forming a team. Finally, there are no unique incentives to play on-foot team missions. Everything I earned in team on-foot missions, I can earn more and faster when I solo. Maybe provide some rare materials or special tokens we can exchange skins or unique weapons for?
Hopefully, in the not distant future, I can jump into combat drop into an Anarchy settlement or Thargoid-infested cave with three other commanders with a click of a button. With our hand-held laser, flamer, and grenade launchers, we chew bubblegums in our combat space suits and kick ass. I can dream a little right? Maybe we can get there, but first, imiplement a PVE matchmaking function please.
