Odyssey VR-FINGERS OUT FRONTIER GALS/GUYS PLEASE

Have the programmers at Frontier never heard of AMD's Direct3D11 based interface "LIQUID VR"?? NVIDIAS VRWorks??? The VIRTUAL FUNCTIONS are virtually WAITING to be filled! ;) So disappointing, I use VR for playing Elite Dangerous almost exclusively and bought a Pimax 5k and top graphics card JUST FOR ED VR. To be told "We dont feel like we can do it justice" is a VIRTUAL insult :) to most gamers knowledge of hardware and software capability. Also being a programmer myself and after having used both of the above NVIDIA and AMD tools/API'S and more to enhance VR framerates/rendering and being an avid tinkerer and coder in this area it's obvious to me that it is well within the capability's of mid to high end graphics cards to render Odyssey scenes in full VR now! Especially with the latest familys of Graphics cards AMD 68000 NVIDIA 3080+ C'mon Mr Braben and Co, I'll do it myself for you for an announcers voice in a Pleiades space station ;). It's not THAT difficult surely! Sure your programmers could incorporate this into your Cobra engine! Really does feel like maybe you are discarding us. HOPE I'm wrong. Brabens/Frontiers gaming exploits are legendary IMHO! C'mon Guys, FINGERS OUT!!!!!!

Maybe FD are waiting for AMD 6800's and Nvidia 3080 to become available to buy without having to take out a second mortgage before fully unlocking Odyssey in VR.
Like you I play exclusively VR but even if they did give us VR on foot I would still limit my time to the absolute minimum on a second rate FPS in a game I play for the immersion of flying a space ship or driving my SRV around alien Moons.
If it was VR on foot against Thargoids in their mothership or even better have Thargoids/Pirates be given the ability to board your ship and then you had to fight them on foot on your own ship then that would have made me sit up and take notice!

Fly safe

I hope you are right about Frontier waiting for availability but unfortunately their "in ship Odyssey VR" fell some what short on the rendering front too. BTW they have given us rendering on foot already though they've plonked a room size cardboard box on our heads with the flap on the far side removed! My intuition tells me that the devs arnt upto the job for some reason! We shall know more with the full release and in the months following where they are going with VR! I'm a patient man when it comes to these things, I just dont want all the VR users to be dumped unceremoniously in the months following! I know the VR API's SDK'S and TOOLS are there on hand to get the joib done for mid to top end cards at least and I dare say so does Braben and Co. Question is; is the will there! X

While I would be over the moon to see the integration of dedicated VR APIs to improve performance it is clear that it is not going to happen ever.

We have been banging this drum for years and the VR implementation has remained completely unmodified.

I dont however see this as the problem. I think Odyssey and its high speed FPS locomotion mechanic does not fundamentally work well in VR and no amount of rendering magic will overcome that. This is why they wanted to avoid it in the first place.

And I'm not sure the title of your post is going to motivate anything - If you are as you say, a programmer, then you should know that being told to get your finger out of your butt isn't likely to put you in the frame of mind to innovate.

I see, that you would not be able to compete with this high speed FPS-scenarios in VR at this state. But this is nothing I would really miss. What I do will miss however is the opportunity to leave my ship on a far away planet und see the sunset on foot. I could even control my space legs character with the thumbsticks on my HOTAS or even with an Xbox-controller.
Well I hope this will be possible in the future.

Sorry to rant about the VR-Cinema-Mode again, but I think since the VR-community is the smaller party of the player base, we have to be make quite a bit noise until we are heard.

"Get your fingers out" was a play on using a KB. HORIZONS works fine in VR with a mid rangeish AMD VEGA64 card on my Pimax 5k. Using a 3090 and even a 6900xt is pretty much overkill on Odyssey, 120 fps on my PIMAX 5k VR with both cards. Problem WAS that before todays update and advice on resetting the graphics config files the rendering was horrible. The Tech is here NOW, for top end VR too. Question is when will they optimize their VR for both AMD and NVIDIA, they did it for HORIZONS, no reason why they cant do it for Odyssey eventually. Just a question of delegating it out to the right programmers. They are trying to do a lot and in such difficult times with this release. As for motivating; one can but try.
