Off into battle

Looking for combat advice. Got 80mil in the bank from trading and ensign rank so FAS is an option. Combat rank of 33% harmless after killing a few interdictions. My dilemma is do I down grade to Viper and cut my teeth on small fry or go straight in with an A grade FAS and live with expensive rebuys?

There are no rebuys when you use a FAS.. there is only DEATH AND DESTRUCTION!!!

Pretty much this. Wouldn't hurt to grab a Viper and have a go in combat and see how you do, though. You might be truly terrible, in which case getting better in a cheap ship would be sensible.

"Forge your own path"

Try 'em all.

It's not all about dps, SCBs and min/maxing.

One of my favourite ships is the Eagle. It's super fast, has a paper bag hull/shields and weapons that politely tap enemy ships on the shoulder but is way satisfying.
See what floats ya boat.

Going straight into the FAS may ruin your opinion of the other ships as it is a bit of a beast.

The Cobra is a good starter and also has the best ability to flee when it all goes pear shaped. (fastest ship in the game)
The Viper rocks.
The Courier is also extremely good.
The Vulture is a beast.

All subtely different but loads of fun.

With my combat skills I shouldn't really be commenting in here but it makes sense to go with the cheaper option until you know the score with combat zones. If it all goes south then the rebuy is cheaper.

Also I wouldn't sell the hulls of your ship just asset strip them of kit where possible and put the lowest rated options for any of the default units like power plant. You get 100% money back for fittings but lose 10% on the sale of the ship. Assuming you're going to want that ship again at some point then there's little point selling the hull and losing 10%.

If you have absolutely no combat experience I'd go with a Cobra first just to get some experience. It's a cheap rebuy. Normally I'd suggest to go for a Vulture. Also not overly expensive. But that one needs careful power management. The FAS doesn't. It's essentially a fat-:):):):):) Vulture with more guns and less power issues. With 80M in the bank an A-rated FAS will not have much space for insurance cases.

Edit: fat-behinded...Seriously?

All great advice. Thanks conch, did not know that about FAS. Love the cobra (club of 84). Going to go vulture. Why take a knife to a gun fight?

vulture is a great ship and great fun.
the power management issnt a real issue. Start it up with 2 gimb pulse lasers and you somewhat have to choose between best thruster or best shields.
i prefer thrusters A and a B shield.

and if you wanna do some pve gimme a holla :p

Get a Viper and learn how to fight with minimal rebuy if you fail. When half-decent get a Vulture. THEN jump into the FAS. Any seasoned CMDR that sees "Mostly Harmless" on a FAS isn't going to hesitate to jump you.

I'd recommend 1,000 kills minimum before buying the FAS. Head out into the local NAV point / Conflict zone or whack noob Steam players at LHS3447; your call.

This is spot on. You'll only start to realise just how good each ship is if you learn to fly its predecessor.

Viper- great little ship, hits hard and rebuy is minimal.
Vulture- the best current fighting ship (until apparently the FDL in 1.5). Hits very hard, turns quicker than anything. Can beat anything 1 on 1.
FAS- heavier more powerful Vulture, needs pip management when swarmed with enemy wings but it will win if you know what you're doing and outfit it accordingly.

This is all PvE btw, not too experienced at winning PvP yet!

This, however unless your pirating use a Viper not a Cobra, its cheaper, better in combat (imho) and the Cobra is like hitting a hot air balloon with a shotgun at 10 yards if someone catches you full turn on top.

Vulture is the ultimate killing machine for a reasonable price, Courier if you want it to be a little more fun :).

I'm pretty sure I read on another post somewhere that your combat rank defines the rank of NPC's spawned rather than a craft that you are in. Also pretty sure thats how it happened for me, as soon as I got to Master there were a lot more Deadly and Elite NPC's around and more wings.
So you will rule in a FAS with a Mostly Harmless rating. However, you may be someone that likes to do combat on a more even footing, in which case get a viper or something

Well, a Viper is a bit backwards in my eyes, and especially not a fun ship to travel with etc.

I think the DBS would be perfect for a start, good to learn fighting in, great fun to fly, very nice to travel around in...

I brought one of those the other week, it was great fun and good weapon placement so instantly wanted the DBE. Which I traded it in for as soon as I found a station that was selling one. Wish I had brought one of these instead of going down the Cobra, Asp route back then

You miss the point. If you fight in various ships you learn their advantages and disadvantages. Then when you are fighting the little bleeders later you'll know how to maneuver your ship to give yourself the advantage in the combat. Someone with a "Mostly Harmless" rating needs to know this before risking 15+ million on a FAS.

Very true. Playing with an FAS against Mostly Harmless NPC's will not hone your combat skills. Mind you, playing with a FAS at any rank can make you a lazy combateer (Is that a word?)
Also, well done for getting such a harsh swearword through the bleeper
