Official LEGO launch the Zorgon Peterson Adder!!

New space Lego is bobbins, so many pre-moulded pieces. I still remember getting this bad boy for Christmas:

That actually had an SRV in the back too, it opened up with clamshell doors, had a ramp that folded down to deploy it and everything.

I remember I lost a couple of the little red bricks that made the landing lights on the base to the vacuum cleaner and I think the cat might have had one of them too. I was heartbroken. :(

Way too many specific purpose blocks these days. What happened to the genius of LEGO coming up with interesting builds from pretty mundane block.

Purpose made blocks don't need as much imagination. Master builders never needed them, or instructions :)

Very true. When I was a child (over 40 years ago) I would make Lego warships, and my turret design was to use a 3X2 as the base (with a 2X1 as the pivot point), a pair of 8X1 as the barrels (with a 2X1 between them), and another 3X2 on top. Looked right to me.

Immersion

Oh - by the way I had the OP's Lego kit bought for me last year! I am nearly half a century older than the OP's son.

My "Cosmic Cruiser" (kit 6890) had an SRV that could also fly, or at least skim along the ground anyway ... released in 1982 it was very advanced for its time ;)

Shame I had to flog it on ebay a few years back along with a load of other classic space lego stuff :(

I had that! totally forgot about the SRV until I just saw the pic! Thanks! Loved that thing.

My son has it and all my space lego now, all in bits with the rest of my old lego but still there. Has a bunch of the spacemen, even a little black one I used to pretend was Darth Vader :)

A good quality copy of galixy explorer - The holy grail!

I'm in the process of recreating my classic space collection and have been lucky enough to get get a couple of the sets for christmas and birthday and about to make an order on bricklink for the parts to restore some of my old sets.

Most of my collcection is in storage but I've got a few sets and figs in a cupboard:

Oh, I had so many of these, I'll never forgive myself getting rid of my legos as a teenager!

Around christmas, I treated myself the Research / Space Supply station:

Back in my day we had six sizes of bricks and two colours.

The youth of today... [haha]

Were the building instructions on parchment too? I mean I'm 44 and I had space lego, not to mention a rather cool go-kart from the technical range:
