As the head of Public Relations for Aisling’s Angels, I would like to clear up a statement I made regarding the recent actions of Arissa Lavigny-Duval and Senator Denton Patreus and the refugees of Quivira for the 20th of May GalNet News Broadcast.
I would like to start by saying that this small mistake is completely understandable given the rush of reporting the news from all over the Galaxy, and these things do happen when shortening larger statements into shorter excerpts, sometimes words can be taken the wrong way in different contexts, but of primary note is that we did not intend to commend Arissa Lavigny-Duval’s agitation attempts.
We would like to thank the people of Quivira for their support, though it was not solicited and was not required in response to our largess. We did what we could to help them because it was the right thing to do, and the Quivirian refugees have truly expressed the ideals of Imperial honour in their response. We are glad to welcome them as fellow citizens.
The honour of the people of Quivira stands in sharp contrast to the actions of others involved in this affair. While we understand a debt is a debt and it should be repaid, we do believe the Senator Patreus is being inappropriate in how he goes about collecting these debts. Asking the Senator to consider renegotiating terms that are actually possible for Quivira and others to meet, in which they can actually repay this debt, is not unreasonable, and it will help avoid unnecessary bloodshed. We support his decision to relieve the people of Quivira of responsibility for the debt of their government and see it as a potential step forward for future debt negotiations to be carried out in a humane manner, but we question the apparent eagerness with which he plunged a system into war. We have every faith that Senator Patreus will prove himself the man of honor and character that we know him to be, and will keep the plight of the citizens of these systems in mind in the future.
The Empire and its representatives should not be seen as unreasonable loan sharks. We should be the beacon of humanism and liberty to the unenlightened, a step forward for humanity, not simply warbringers and petty accountants like the leaders of the Federation. But his actions were merely unwise, and we hope he will learn from this experience.
The actions of Arissa, who claims to represent the Empire as a whole, are less forgivable. Covertly arming desperate people who have already lost the fight, in defiance of Imperial law, is asking for a Quiviran slaughter. This is exactly what she must know would happen if they provoked Patreus with a counter attack. Perhaps this is what Arissa was counting on, which is a condemnation of her in its own right. If she was truly intending to offer humanitarian aid, that is to be commended, but this is highly doubtful. The worse alternative is that she was inciting open rebellion against the Empire itself, arming untrained refugees and encouraging them to go forth and kill loyal Imperial citizens. And why did she do this? As a petty insult against a political rival? We are glad the Quiviran's rejected her poison, and saw the benefits of peaceful coexistence, but the situation casts serious doubts on Lavigny's loyalty to the Empire as well as her ability to lead.
If you care to read it, my original statement to GalNet News is below. It had to be significantly shortened for the news cycle, so I understand the confusion in context. However, I did not in any way intend to commend Arissa Lavigny-Duval’s borderline treachery, what I intended to commend was any humanitarian aid, however, I think it is highly likely that this weapons smuggling is anything but humanitarian.
“I think any humanitarian goals and efforts are to be commended. It is more important to be loyal to the ideals that the Empire should stand for, rather than the figures themselves. I pledge my support to Aisling because she seems to be consistently supporting Imperial humanism. However, I believe any humanist actions undertaken by any Imperial are going to ultimately move the Empire in the correct direction and should be lauded.
As far as Patreus and his debt collection, a debt is a debt and it should be repaid with honor, but I do believe the Senator is being unfair with how he goes about collecting these debts. Asking the Senator to consider renegotiating terms that are actually possible for Quivira and others to meet, in which they can actually repay this debt, is not unreasonable, and it will help avoid unnecessary bloodshed. Not to mention, war is expensive!
The Empire and its representatives should not be seen as unreasonable loan sharks, we should be the beacon of humanism and liberty, a step forward for humanity, to attract others to our cause. I do believe Patreus has the honor and character to consider this in the future, and I look forward to a potential slight lessening of his stringent policies regarding interstellar debts to avoid further misery.”
