Offline/Online game play

As I am new to Elite Dangerous (not Elite itself) I was wondering if this new release of Elite can only be played online, or like the old timer players who would like the game but do not have internet access can play it offline. I want this game on release and would like to enjoy both online and offline game play.

An offline mode is planned, but it will be unconnected to the online game - no switching.

Thank you both for replying so fast. I first played Elite weeks after release back in the 80's (showing my age) and still play frontier when I get a chance. It will be nice to blast some Thargoids again:smilie: A long wait is finally over :D:D

What exactly does the "Online Solo" mode entail right now anyway? You can't see other players at all, but the markets in stations are shared? Because I stumbled across fights which didn't look like it was the AI flying (or I'm underestimating it ;))

Online Solo - No humans, just NPCs, but your actions effect the game in Online All mode.

If you saw no hollow markers on your ship's scanner then you saw NPCs only. Players have hollow scanner markers; NPCs have solid markers. Squares have hardpoints stowed; triangles have hardpoints deployed.

So I take it that the game also has different modes whilst online. If I solo online and make lots of money do I still have that cash if I go into multiplayer mode.

I understand in offline mode nothing transfers to online mode.

However, don't be surprised if ED requires you to login even to play offline (to authenticate that you own the game,) so you still may need an internet connection to play.

ED?

I suppose I would have to pay a subscription to play online, just so I can play offline lolz

You can play in 'Online Solo' for as long as you wish, then switch to the online multiplayer modes, and back again if it's not your cup o' tea ;) Basically, whenever you choose.

Eventually, there will be a seperate, dedicated offline mode, no switching to online, local savegame file.

It seems to be getting better and better . All we will need is all the military lasers and super ships. I am looking forward to the fun.

Think of it as filters. In the all online mode, there are no filters (other than network limitations) that prevent other players from sharing your space. In solo-online mode, all other players are filtered out of your space - so you will never see any.

In addition, the group and ironman features will promote variations of the filtering of players. A player can change the filter (solo - group - all) at will with the exception of ironman mode. An ironman player status will change to the (solo - group - all) on death. In addition, players in the (solo - group - all) can be forced to the all group on certain criminality status.

But in the end, the online universe is shared between all the online players.
