Oh man! 7,000 Ly just to find out I can't finish a mission

OK, so it's all my fault, but I'm still going to whinge about it anyway.

I've taken a mission to take a famous explorer to Glorious Nebula (Hen 2-23). I'm in modest asp (35.95) Ly.

I only get to play a few hours a week and it's taken me 2 weeks to get 7KLy, the route planner can't get me a route for the last 1,000!

I should have brought an SRV... But I've no idea if I could even get there with boost. I can't get within 600ly.

I shan't be taking passenger missions out from the hub again!

Sigh.

Why is your jump range so low? Though the mission should probably suggest a jump ranges or w/e but that's a lot of time to hammer down the hundreds of places to go see so I think that could take a while to do.

To be fair how is this your fault? Is there a way to know minimum jump range needed.

Have you tried running your fuel tank down? It may give you the jump range you need

Just think of it as a learning curve, elite isn't suppose to be easy! That's what makes it fun :) the fact you took it on shows you have enjoyed the challenge.

Try plotting smaller increments.

At 35LY you should be able to get most anywhere but the deep edges of the galaxy. I ran into some Galaxy Map routing problems during my last exploration trip that didn't seem to make sense - and that was in a 55KLY capable ship. It's probably just a problem with the route plotting in the map, unless you are way far out at the edges.

Also check to make sure that you have all star classes selected for plotting the route, as you may be in a zone where you need to jump to a few non-scoopable stars in order to move ahead.

HTH

It's not that low :) A grade FSD with a modest G3 mod. I was hoping this mission will give me the rep to get a decent FSD.

Modding is difficult for the time limited (I almost referred to myself as casual) player.

Check to see what/if route filters may be set in the Galaxy Map.

As far as I know there was no way of knowing I couldn't complete the mission before I set out. FD could relatively easily work it out (the route planner is only limited to 1,000 Ly because FD have put the limit in) you then just put the longest leg in the mission text.

Empty tank only gives me an extra Ly, so I doubt it... Looks like you need 60ly.

Not directly, but you should always check where the mission goes. 7k towards the closest edge is very difficuly. 7K towards colonia can be done in a stock sidey probably.

The longer the distance the longer it takes, exponentially. Plotting 7k could lead to all kinds of nastiness. :(

I do, and I hope posting here might serve as a warning to others too!

I doubt I'm going to enjoy the walk of shame home.

Wow Meric, I'd think with 35 jump range you could get almost anywhere in the galaxy, much less find yourself halted 1000 LY's from your destination. I traveled to Beagle Point 65k+ LY's from Sol on 30.55 range. I suggest not giving up, and to post this conundrum on the Exploration sub-forum and see if they can help you over there; that's where the hardcore explorers hang out and pool knowledge. Dangerous Discussion is kind of meh when it comes to the loftier pursuits:)

I had the same, but not so bad problem for Sol's True Northern Star mission. I got as close as 130~ly and couldn't jump to any other stars. Lol

I went home defeated. :p

Then came up with the idea of a Galactic Measuring Tool.
Another option in the Galmap that lets you select any two stars, and see the distance between them in a straight line.

It looks like you need at least 45LY to make the final jump, so yeah,

another FD "Here, pull my finger."

Not your fault m8, no reason to feel an emotion likie shame. Ive never done a single passenger mission as my build doesnt allow fer cabins or cargo space, and Im not a huge fan of the bubble so am rarely there anyway.

That being said, unless its to the edge of one the arms, then it should be a simple case of plotting jumps one or two at a time, bookmarking the way back if needed. Your 35ly range is higher than anything Ive ever owned because I dont do engineers at all...reasons already given, they in the bubble. Now Ive gotten meself into tight spots before with a 33ly aspx, but with some planning and thought, there is always a way through. Granted, I have at least 2 srv on trips out, so getting jumponium isnt an issue and 100% gives me enough to get amost anywhere. Might need to try a hundred or so ly from a different direction...welcome to exploration btw ^

Yep. 45 and jumponium. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Welcome to exploration... My rank is Ranger. Should know better ;)

If you think 35ly is low, then you haven't tried out the for these missions designed vessels. If you find a mission with the same destination needing vip cabins, then good luck!

I actually haven't. I asked for a reason! I'll build one up on beta to see how it all goes. Though in the future the passenger mission ships all are getting a second look and some were buffed already.

Huh. I'm carrying three full cabins of passengers in a 22 ly jump Orca. Luckily all targets are about 7000 ly towards Sag A*. It never occurred to me that short jump range could be a disaster.

Thank you for the warning OP!

45 LY's to the final destination? Ouch. I guess the moral of the story is always pack an SRV for the gathering of jumponium when not trading or flying combat op's. Better luck next time, OP:)
