"Oh Noes!! New players won't have anywhere to explore! This is so unfair!"

So just for the sake of it, I really quickly tried to calculate how long it would take one person to conduct an exploration of each system just using the Advanced Discovery Scanner. So I multiplied the (((number of systems*scanning time(s))/60)/60)/24=time in days for one person to scan every system and this does not include discovering any other bodies in the system...

The result was 208,333,333 and 1/3 days. Then assume that 300,000 players do non-stop exploring (not accounting for backtracking and additional travel time required due to the shape of the galaxy) and it would take them 694 days of play time (still not including detailed scanning of any celestial bodies).

I suspect there will be plenty of material for everyone guys :)

Did you remember to count in charging FSD and jumping? :D

Edit. Apparently you did, as we used exactly the same number for doing it as fast as possible :D

400 000 000 000 * 45s / 60s / 60min / 24hours

Edit 2. So lets include average of 10 sec of fuel scooping per jump because you would move with short jumps (about 4-6 ly on average i guess, so no much fuel lost.) so now it makes about 850 days. Now lets assume that every player plays lets say 3 hours per week which makes it about 26 minutes per day, so you need to play 26 mins per day for about 55 days to make it one day of playing, so with average of 3 hours per week playing ( i know 3 hours is not much for some but im going to go with it.) 850 * 55 = 47 076 days = 129 years :). I might have done some mistake somewhere, i'm drunk and stupid.

Yah, I timed it when I was exploring and on average (scooping with a class 6 fuel scoop) I skimmed the star from exiting the jump immediately and simultaneously started charging the jump drive and the scanner. I was able to get between 35-45 seconds for my best times (including the jump between systems, but that could vary widely depending on the loading time).

Despite this, i still rushed out and tagged a few systems, in case they ran out.....

With new players starting in the same central location, exploration times will become egregious.

I had a friend who hasn't got the game yet say something similar after seeing some screenshots I shared, expecting by the time they got into the game that most things would be discovered. I then streamed the game and gave a tour of the galaxy map.

They were no longer concerned :p

Anyone who worries about running out of things to explore hasn't done an exploration trip more than 2000ly from Sol. I occasionally encounter a star that someone else has explored. But it's very rare -- less than 1 in 1000.

I went towards a nebula the other day and literately every system along the way had already been discovered.

Everyone and their mother has visited the nebula within a few thousand LY of Sol so the paths heading towards them are heavily traveled especially if you take a direct route. Get off the beaten path and head up or down on the galactic plane to approach them from a different angle.

Yeah true. I do find the whole exploration situation a bit disappointing tbh. Whilst its nice to get out and see some interesting things, in its present state, I find exploration boring and repetitive -grindy. There seems little challenge or skill to it but rather a rush for everyone to go out and tag places first. I do fear by the time it is embellished and becomes more engaging, many of the areas of interest such as nebulas will have already been visited.

It also strikes me as odd that a ship all on its own can traverse over the other side of the galaxy. Wouldn't people run out of food?

Nebula, what nebula? Sorry, been off loitering in Empire space...

i wondered who would dare use the rare commodity 'Tiolce Waste2Paste' - and then reading your post, it all became clear...

explorer's wife on his return from the big black: "hug only, no kisses thanks. now go and brush your teeth. a lot."

The only time I see it becoming more engaging is when we get planetary landings and maybe walking.
So new discovered tags for first foot on the ground.
And maybe artefacts to collect - might give us a reason to finally visit a rocky moon (sorry planet:p )!
Plus if you want to eat; by that point we may have to hunt for food.
All depends how deep FD want to make it.

Hopefully landing and prancing around on foot will be so time consuming that the rate of exploration slows enough that we'll all have a shot at something in a nebula this time!

That said I claimed something in the sadr region a while back but there's certainly no unexplored nebulae left for you :D
