Oh, woe is me!!

Pity me all you CMDRs...

My slightly elderly GTX560 died last night - total system shutdown, right in the middle of playing.

I was jumping into a system, and bang....which was the sound of my jaw hitting the deck incidentally.

So, 20 mins later, with my rig in pieces, I had diagnosed the GPU as the issue, and whipped it out.

Unfortunately, that leaves me with the woeful Intel thing on the motherboard, as I don't have a replacement card.

Anyway, just for a laugh, I installed the drivers, and fired up ED, set the graphics to 'low' and hit play.

8 fps.... yes, you read that right, 8 fps.

So back to fiddling with the graphics settings, and after a bit I managed to find something workable...

1080p at 0.5 supersampling, everything on low (or off) gives me 30 fps - yay!

Looks very retro - almost Doom-esque.

If only you could read the bleedin' writing!!

Anyway, on a plus note, it's the excuse I've been looking for to get a nice shiny 4Gb GTX 970, which is on the way from Amazon as I type this.

Can't wait for Ultra settings... :D

Sorry to hear about your graphics card breaking. I hope you manage to get a replacement soon.

Frontier need to offer a wireframe option for moments like these or for those that want to play retro :).

Here's to hoping my GTX 880 holds out. Been beautiful so far, but it'll have it's first birthday in August and it might start getting temperamental on me.

You can listen to this while cruisin' and bruisin'

Glad you can still play. Would be gutted if my card took a tumble.
.
Is that not what it is meant to look like when playing with the Oculus Rift.
.
Or is the rift actually better?

That Intel graphics can work at all is still an achievement in itself! Would it look better if you used a lower rendering resolution but allow either the GPU or monitor to scale to fit the display?

That's a shame commander, may your card rest in peace.

I upgraded from the GTX 660TI to the GTX 970 and I can tell you now you won't be disappointed! Only problem with it is that it's so new and shiny that you need to upgrade everything else!

Heh. That's pretty much what mine looks like all the time. Only I get 12 fps in the dock. :(

You get used to it.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. :D

That's a very nice excuse, and I'm sure you're going to be happy with the 970.

I built a system around a 970 myself, for the sole purpose of playing ED. Except for the occasional planetary and hyperjump stutter (which I believe is not the 970's fault), I am completely satisfied with the performance, as well as the TDP and noise level. Running it at WQHD resolution, Ultra settings with some tweaks here and there, and Vsynced to 60 Hz, because that's what my monitor has, and the 970 rarely, if ever, dips below it. Normally it wants to put out well over 100 or even more than 200 FPS at 2560x1440 pixels.

Frontier need to offer a wireframe option for moments like these or for those that want to play retro :).
Hear, hear!

Ha ha ha!!!!

It's here - Amazon actually delivered! :)

Not bad considering it was ordered at 6.50pm last night.

Anyway, it's in, it works, and I'm on Ultra at silly fps...

Excuse the dodgy wiring - was in a hurry! :D

Based on the half hours play I just had, I'd recommend this bit of kit!

Congrats! The GTX970 is a very good card and Asus uses high quality components.
Now we just need DirectX12 support :)

I didn't know you could use supersampling to get it to undersample lime that. I've got a 6 year old hd4870 and a core duo cpu so I get 30 fps in a RES and 20 in a war zone, 15 if it gets really busy. Undersampling may mean I can go play in a CZ more easily :)

Just had to buy a new boiler for the heating at home so a PC upgrade is not imminent :(

Well, just to finish off, and to give everyone a chuckle, here's the final part of the tale...

I thought I'd give Shadowplay a go, so I set it up, and went on a little trading trip to a station in the same system.

All was going well till the missus walked in and started talking to me, so here's the result...

My first Shadowplay vid shows me being a right n00b! :D

Nice reverse flying out of the station :).

I'm glad you got your new card in time to play for the rest of the weekend.
