Ok, Alpha 2.0 was great, ..what's next ?

we had a great fun (and actually still have it) with alpha stage 2.0.
Even for people like me, who doesn't truly joined the alpha subscription, was a real fun seeing dozen of video/screenshots who testify the wonderful job done until now by FD.

But this is a rising expectation on every new step.

So now.... what's next ?

Mr. Braben said a vague ''trading / travelling'' , but what really does it means ?

1) i suppose it means the first test of buy/sell goods from ..? where ? station to station ?
so there will be space stations in the next alpha ?
Or may be not ?
2) travel : it means that you should move from planet to planet in the same star system ? so it means supercruise velocity ?
2b) or it means that you will be able to travel from star to star so Hyperspace jump ?

3) if the answer or all the question here above is YES it means that the amount of work is pretty huge ..so---> at least 2 months of wait ?

help me to understand pls, thanks all.

p.s. i had a strange wierd dream last night: i was playing the alpha 3.0 when at some point, going in supercruise velocity to reach a planet actually i was able to land on it.
I was also able to go out of my spaceship (the sidewinder) and walking around.
There was a crowd all around (all npc) there was a revolution in act with people shouting and waving etc..
Then i realized that an unexpected Beta was started without pre-warning.
I quitted the game and surprise i meet Braben (in flesh and bones) who speak with me (!!) about the decision to start the Beta.
A very funny dream considering that landing on planet/walking and having (the outsider) feature of the full crowd will come only later within 1 year or more..

I agree that there are a lot of new aspects of the game that need to be introduced to properly test trading and travelling, but I doubt we're going to have to wait two months - presumably a lot of the work has already been done, I would be very surprised if work for the content of Alpha 3 only started the day after Alpha 2 came out!

WARNING: just speculation.

Yeah, there will be stations, docking, traveling between stations, buying/selling stuff. I guess this will be first time we will see ED actually in form it will grow from. If lucky there will be several systems which will travel between, but definitely there will be mini-jumps and supercruise.

Frontier have said that that want to test combat related stuff first, since that will be the hardest to get right; however, I am sure progress in other areas is coming along nicely :).

Alpha 2.0 has information on a fair number of star systems (over 1000 if I remember correctly). It's likely that we will be able to travel between some of them; alternatively, we could be flying between stations at different planets in the same system. This may or may not include supercruise (maybe not since it was a late addition).

While the combat has been fun, I am much more interested in the trading and exploration :). However, I think we can expect at least one more patch to the multiplayer combat; it's still unstable.

since i can't test alpha by my own, there are some problems with alpha combat that must be fixed ?
and what upgrade are you talking about ? weapons ? settings of the ship ?
or whatever ?

Mostly it is network protocol issues - peer to peer sessions doesn't handle state changes and crashing clients very well. When it's fixed, we can start to look in direction of 3.0. I assume not every bug will be fixed during 2.0, like ship balancing will be carried over to next phases.

interesting informations.

yeah, i should expected some (network or similar) issues like that.. i didn't think about it.
well, thanks for the news.. they are precious info.
May be i should have wait to open this thread another week, lol, but that's it...

have a good job guys.

i hope that once the job on alpha 3.0 will begin we will have some other info about it.

There are still a lot of networking issues, although they have been reduced a great deal already. I am playing in the USA, and have found that the alpha behaves much better late at night, when the UK has gone to bed; having said that, it is fantastic to see people from all over the world in the same instance!

The combat itself is fun, but needs a fair amount of balancing tweaking; this can go on in the remaining alpha and beta stages.

I expect that work on 3.0 would have continued in parallel with the 2.2 fixes. The only impact on 3.0 timescales would be if there was problems integrating 2.2 fixes with the 3.0 build. I would imagine. Maybe.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

I'll echo that, as it mirrors my own experience as well.

My hope for Alpha 3 - don't crash every time a mission ends. BOOM! ;)

Nah, I'm actually really looking forward to the trading/traveling!

I hope that in Alpha 3.0 (travelling & trading alpha), we get a full system to travel in (so only Supercruise) with stations to dock and cargo to trade from station to station with the possibility to upgrade, change loadout and repair the Sidewinder.

That should be a contained enough world to test all major aspects of the game with as few variables as possible.

Of course we'll probably get the 2.2 first to fix all the major stability issues.
