Ok, bought a Vive this morning and its good and all but...

I had the Oculus last year and thought why the heck not try the Vive since I can return it to shop and get Money back if not satisfied anyway.
So I did this morning. Setup Went really smoot. Like 15 min and Elite was up and running.

The vive really has better FOV, not the extreme feeling of looking down a tube like the Rift.
But the focus is worse when looking with Eyes to the sides and up/down.

Scale and all is perfect, no scale issues as folks are talking about. Felt as good as in the Rift.
I did the 0.75 and 2.0 SS and got steady 90 fps with some adjustments recommended in the forum here.

So yes it would be a keeper for sure if not for the head discomfort from the set.
After two hours of testing and with some minor nausea(that Went away) my face cant take it really.

The pressure and weight of the set makes it a session of endurance challenge for my head and face.
I feel like I have been smashed by a rubber hammer in the face. Cheeks are numb and Eyes extremely tired and glary :)
ITs really tiresome to wear the headset.

I had a similar feeling with the rift but it was lighter. But the padding was thinner so it felt approximately the same as the Vive after an hour.
Also, maybe I have somehting wrong with my Eyes but my right one had some focus issues and felt more blurry all the time.

So, now I have tested both and immersive wise I Think the Vive is better with bigger FOV and more contrast.
Also, there are no godrays at all compared to Rift. And no other artifacts except blurry image when looking only with Eyes left and right.

So in short, its far too strenuous to the face to wear the headset to enjoy playing Elite in VR.

Fun real life fact: my face isn't perfectly symmetrical. One eye is slightly higher than the other, so I have to turn my Vive headset slightly for sharper focus. It's part if my Elite: Dangerous checklist:

  1. Set up hotas
  2. tilt chair
  3. put in earbuds
  4. put on headset
  5. twist headset slightly counter clockwise
  6. enjoy

So in short, its far too strenuous to the face to wear the headset to enjoy playing Elite in VR.

There's a new HTC head strap on the way which is supposed to solve this :

Have you considered one of the VRCovers you can buy?

They help with comfort a lot.

To be honest it sounds like you have the straps too tight, quite a common thing to do when first using a Vive or Rift though.

BTW - the FOV differences between the Rift and Vive are negligible at best. I wouldn't say "the extreme feeling of looking down a tube like the Rift." is true in the slightest. It would be true to say that the Vive has a slight, barely noticeable edge in the FOV department though. Maybe your IPD wasn't set right on the Rift when you tried it.

Hi,

Yeah, maybe a bit of exaggeration there :) Anyway, I Think I had it roughly OK since if I released the straps more it glided down on the nose too much so there was a balance.

Anyway, I am going back to store tomorrow and exhange it for a 55" oled instead. See what it gives :)

Isn't that what the top strap is for? As in, to stop the device slipping down...

Your loss dude but each to their own. I personally couldn't bare the thought of gaming on a TV again, no matter the size.

I'm fairly sure you just don't have the straps adjusted correctly. I don't know about the Vive, but with the Rift, the headset isn't supposed to be resting on your nose or pressing into your face. The center strap and rear part of the headset (where it sits against the base of your skull on the back of your head) should be holding most of the weight of the headset.

I don't know if you already returned it, but for what it's worth, I've had similar problems with my Vive. I found the 14mm memory foam replacement pad pretty much solved them for me. Obviously the Vive is a fairly heavy piece of kit, and I rarely try to wear it for more than an hour or so at a stretch, but the pad makes it considerably more comfortable for me.

You could also try something like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4lkd05/how_to_make_the_vive_more_comfortable_to_wear/

I've only fiddled with this a bit myself since the replacement pad worked wonders for me, but adding a cheap welding mask headpiece did shift where the unit's weight rests on my head, so it might be worth a try.

Comfort is my single biggest issue with VR, it wasn't actually a problem though until I started the long play sessions with Elite!

I've tried various covers/pads etc and they were no better for me, just different. (changing out half way actually helps! fresh!)

I'm sceptical of the new deluxe strap, it seems to borrow from oculus and the (awful) HoloLens strap. Not to mention it looks like using your own cans would be difficult with all that plastic. I would prefer a no headphone version as I'm really happy with my wireless Turtle Beeches....

Ultimately however, I think VR is such a game changer that I'm willing to deal with it. I have a projector, but Elite (or anything) on that completely sucks compared to the Vive.

Lack of VR has killed off star citizen for me but that's another story!

after initially thinking psvr was the ultimate in veluuure hmd comfort ive come to appreciate the vive a lot more. i find the psvr halo hits the back of my very short neck and pushes the headset forward.

With the vive i can get it just right and wear it for hours, you need to wear it a little tight so it doesn't move and sit it a little high on your head. For me the worst thing is wearing the vive too loose so it moves around.

got my first hotas yesterday and after an hour setting up then another hour smacking into walls i had the best five hours on elite ever. A hotas + vive really is immersion ++ and i only have the cheapo thrustmaster t.flight thing.

But wearing it tight creates such an immens pressure on the face, especially below the Eyes. I cant take that more than 30 min.

I Think the problem with Rift and Vive is that they are designed so that you must press the headset against the face for it to seal and stay in Place.

I wish there was a solution that relied more on fixating the headset on the skull instead. Like a bicycle helmet. Then just fold down a the visor so that a rubber sealing just touches the face.
Like a welding mask or something

Looks nice, perhaps this design will support the headset better so that it does not put so much pressure on face

I have just bought one of these. (expensive) but the comfort is far better. Yes, the old one did push on the face, regardless how you adjusted the straps, but with this new headset the balance is fantastic and I can wear it for hours with no problems.
Now what I want is the wireless version :)

I use that foam with the DAS and it is a lot more comfortable. The DAS puts more of weight on the back of your head which means a lot less is pressure on your face. The DAS should be standard for all new Vive but HTC does not agree.

The DAS does a lot of that. It is really comfortable compared to the old strap.
