General / Off-Topic OK FDev...time to get on the ball!

Well in Elite lore thagroids are not the only Intelligent life found besides humans. And if you read the article, this could be a string of comets. This is still in the hypothesis stages.

It is tantalising, but it really does have to be the most unlikely explanation until natural phenomena have been ruled out.

I would love to see a Dyson sphere, or megastructure in the game. Perhaps a relic of some ancient civilization or two. KIC 8462852 is less than 1.5kly away, set a course.

If anyone is interested you can find the specific paper written on this here.

I think it's a little early to start asking FD to implement alien life here... However It's definitely something I'm sure they'll keep an eye on.

Tanman raises a valid point. The data is 1500 years old. After researching this topic a bit I like the theory of it possibly being a civilization on the cusp of becoming a Type II civilization who 1500 years ago could have been working on the early process of creating a Dyson Sphere or similar technology. One thing I know is that astronomers will certainly have that system watched for the next several years in order to observe possible changes. Imagine 10 years from now KIC 8462852's visible light vanishes entirely... Could you imagine what that would say about the system, and more importantly how advanced the locals would be?

From the summary of the paper already linked:
In this paper, we have shown that KIC 8462852 is an unique sourcein the
Kepler
field. We conducted numerous observations of the
star and its environment, and our analysis characterizes the object
as both remarkable (e.g., the “dipping” events in the
Kepler
light
curve) and unremarkable (ground-based data reveal no deviation
from a normal F-type star) at the same time. We presented an ex-
tensive set of scenarios to explain the occurrence of the dips, most
of which are unsuccessful in explaining the observations in their en-
tirety. However, of the various considered, we find that the break-up
of a exocomet provides the most compelling explanation.
