Ok Frontier... Some things we could all use

A few QoL improvements/implementations that would be of immense benefit to pretty much everyone:

1. A Data Exchange - We've seen and done some neat things with Engineers - the somewhat hidden bases and special circumstances to make them available is kind of nice. So build on that to give us a few specialized NPC's/Facilities, like a Data Exchange. Perhaps in the form of either an Asteroid Base or a "rogue" Outpost that doesn't orbit anything (hide it in an Asteroid Field instead would be neat), where we can swap different data types - trade SLF for CIF, or Open Encryption Keys for Irregular Encryption Data, or whatever combinations of one data type for another data type. Pin some odd Engineer-esque requirements to it, so you actually have to do something to gain access, and there will be contentment throughout the galaxy.

2. A Materials Exchange - I'm so loaded down with Arsenic it's coming out my , Nick. Let me visit the Materials Exchange and trade off 20 units for some Chromium instead. Just like above, give it some odd related requirements to become available, so there's some sense of accomplishment, and galactic contentment will spread.

If the quantities of Data/Materials are kept limited, and/or the exchange rates are reasonably controlled, it won't be subject to abuse - and it won't keep people from searching all the regular means of finding various materials or data, but rather would enhance the whole experience overall, by making some otherwise useless materials or data a bit more valued, for their bartering power.

I might propose a 3:1 exchange - Cash in 3 Specialized Legacy Firmware for a Cracked Industrial Firmware for example, with a limit of 3 exchanges.

Your thoughts?

Agreed.
A sort or Information Broker or Underground Intelligence Center for Engineers, and would totally make sense considering the Engineers are secretive in their own right.

It seems a reasonable idea (although the "it won't be subject to abuse" part is optimistic ;) ), but it's never going to work in practice.

If the effort involved in getting rare materials by exchange is less than by finding them directly, then everyone will just farm the common objects.
If the effort involved in getting rare materials by exchange is greater than by finding them directly, then everyone will carry on farming the rare objects.
If the effort involved in getting rare materials by exchange is the same as by finding them directly, then you've introduced a pointless mechanic which adds nothing to the game.

Min-Maxxers gonna Min-Max.

Even exchange is how it should work, but would be far from pointless. Because I've gathered a fair amount of rare material X through my normal gameplay, but have none of rare material Y.
Instead of having to grind/farm whatever activity to get material Y(which i don't normally do), I can simply exchange some of my material X to obtain it.

Ahhh - Rares for Rares. I hadn't thought of that.
Yes, I can see how that would add value to the game - it allows us to 'blaze our own trail' rather than being 'forced' to do boring things. FDev will never go for it ;)

I think it'd be a good idea if you had to complete a mission before EVERY trade.

You'd rock up at the station and the guy would tell you he needed something random doing (ideally something a bit iffy like stealing something, an assassination or sabotaging an outpost etc).
You accept the mission, complete it, hand it in and you get to trade, say, 5 mat's or 5 data.

I'm not suggesting that just to be spiteful.
Thing is, this would need to be enough of a nuisance that you'd only do it if you were going nuts trying to find mat's or data.
If it wasn't then you'd get people just farming hundreds of whatever mat's/data they can get hold of, knowing that they can just trade it for the stuff they actually want - even if that means sitting at the exchange for hours, waiting for timers to reset etc.

In fact, if it was up to me, I'd probably put the black-market data-exchange in Colonia too. :p

3. Improved course plotting tools. If you're an explorer, you should be able to plot out a search pattern in a cluster of systems all at once.

4. I would particularly like the option to step forwards/backwards along a navigational route - using the keyboard and/or UI buttons. Then I won't have to zoom in / spin / zoom/ scroll / spin / unzoom / swear / spin / scroll / zoom etc until my mouse pointer eventually hits the next step and I can see where I'll be heading ... then repeat x steps in route...

Science tools.

The ability to interact with the environment.

A place to store notes in game for the people who use HMDs.

All the tools required to locate all trade goods, Modules, and ships.

A place to test weaponry before purchasing it.(Firing range.)

The ability to order ships or modules and have them delivered to your home base at a cost.

I could go on for a hour or so but I would be happy with just those things.

You mean, like all the third party tools? :)

Some sort of focus on the gathering of engineers items is definitely required.
The current system is just not fun.
An over reliance on a roll of a dice and the baffling locations you're supposed to find them.
Palin nearly broke me,if it wasn't for the internet i'd have never found them.
Fair enough, they throw you a bone by telling you the system type you need to be in,but neglect to tell you it should be high population, above 500ls,in a particular typ of uss thats really rare!
How would you ever find this out without trial and error and more patience than the Dalai Lama!
I have to assume this is a place holder.
I would happily dump the whole thing and just revert to buying them.

Here you go, Indigo :).

Hello Commander Almondclint!

I think it's unlikely that we will allow the purchase of materials. They exist specifically as a new resource to manage.

That does not invalidate your complaint, of course, so things that we might look into could be: trade materials for higher class or different types at material broker contacts (probably at some loss)....

Let the Min-Maxxers "min-max".....I just don't want to hear them whining about "The Grind" ;).

Yeah, that's my fear as well.
For some reason their mantra is to try to make everyone plays all aspects of the game. Hide combat goodies behind exploration requirements, and vice versa. I've just never understood that mindset. :(

Totally agree with you. A data/mats exchange would be a very good idea indeed...which is why FD would never implement such a system.

They don't want you to have fun, only to grind and then be at the mercy of RNGesus.

Did you bother reading the post I put up above? You know, the one with the quote of Sandro Sammarco saying that they are definitely looking at giving us a Material/Data broker.....or maybe you're so blinded by your irrational hate of FDev that is has taken away your ability to read?
