Right, Here is the story. I logged in the other day, for the first time in ages. I was in the new starter systems in my Cobra MkIII .. I played a tiny bit before deciding to quit the game. Today I loaded up the game (truth be told, for the free ARX points) But it seems that I loaded into an older save (from last year)

What is going on and why am I still putting up with this nonsense?

As has been pointed out, due to the way player data is handled in Elite it isn't possible to load into an older save. You're either misremembering the state of your character, or you have multiple accounts.
