Horizons OK, I give up. Trade Data Mission, Why does it hate me_?

So last night I took a mission to find some trade data on some backwater planet. It gave me four days to do it.
I have two left.

I was happy to take the surface mission for half a million; plus I'm enjoying the time on the surface since I never really did stuff planetside before 2.1.

So it get to the system and stop at the nav point to say hi. It updates me and says its over here on this lovely red planet. Kinda Mars like, pretty cool.

I honked my horn when I got there and when I got near the surface. Nothing. It prolly doesn't matter, but I figured why not?

I'm guessing it's hiding in one of the blue (or red for me) POI's. I spent three hours last night looking. I found all kinds of mats and other trinkets, good to go.
After all the driving, I decided to spend the night in the crew compartment of the python.

Went back out for two more hours today and found more mats and stuff, got killed on a 5 on 1 skimmer fight. Still nothing.

So...
-Am I looking for a shipwreck?
-Shouldn't it be visible on a fly over at 2-3K?
-Is there another way to get more info on the data?
-Am I looking for canisters or a data point?

Oh wise wanderers of the void, please impart your knowledge unto me.
I beseech thee.

How it's worked for me -

Scan nav beacon
Update points to the target planet
Approach planet and see a new maker on the surface
Approach marker on the surface, the ship begins a scan animation on the surface of the planet.
Follow each marker until the ship gets a lock.
Switch to SRV and investigate

Same for me. After scanning the Nav beacon, it led me to the planet. When I got there, there was another marker I could follow (not one of the blue POI thingies, this was a normal destination target). As I approached the target (just like you'd approach a base), it moved a little ways away. So I went toward it, and it moved a couple more times, and then settled down at the actual location. I landed and got the stuff. So there was NO searching on my part, I just followed the marker. I actually think this is really lame, but that's how it works. It leads you there after a short game of keep-away.

Whoa turbo!!

Maybe this is what I'm after.
Marker as in, a circle?
Or marker as in a Nav Entry?
I don't think this has ever happened to me.

Thanks for the help BTW.

So maybe I stay in OC instead of making landfall?

Ah...

Do you remember if i was a nav site on the panel? Or a visual marker?

Sorry if that's redundant...

I had used ADS in Space and the site on the Planet popped up. I also tried droppin out into the Nav Beacon but it would not interact further. Is this how you scan - you drop out or you scan whilst in SC pointing at the beacon and targeted?
Anyway, I got to the planet and the only thing there was this base which I just ignored as the Cargo was said to be in Space! Perhaps I shoulda landed near that base. What a rubbish method of discovery.

Yeah, a nav marker, just like you'd get for a station on the planet.

Sweet justice!!
Maybe this is the break-though I've been looking for.

Rep inbound to both of you.

For the Nav Beacon-
Drop into normal space, on the beacon. Like you were hunting baddies.... Select the beacon- you will get the carets on the sides.... You should hear a sound like a typewriter and fax kinda, after about fifteen seconds you should get some type of mission update.

So far my ADS has given me squat. I am too impatient to actually explore. I might sell it since I stay in the cluster near my base (at the time). But go with what these guys say. I have had the expansion since it came out, but rarely used it. At least to its full extent. [ugh]
