In the end I had to give up. I was indeed going to run out of fuel and with 2.5ly yet to go I had just enough fuel for a 6.5ly jump to the nearest system with a dock. Ships integrity when I docked with a station was at 0% which seems nonsense to me but no matter.

He wanted to do it, and he had time & determination to do it! Nothing wrong with that!

I applaud him for doing the experiment, even if the result was more or less known¹ in advance.

Not really a pointless exercise as I wanted to see if the fuel would get me there (an unknown) as well as seeing for myself what it was like if I reached it even though I knew from other people's experiences.

Sometimes you have to see for yourself like when you visit foreign lands even though people are already there and you've seen all the pictures and videos.

I would like this to be fixed by FD at some point though but not right now necessarily as there are lots better areas I'd prefer they expended their efforts on.
