I may re-think my shield loadout though. I may have to give up some jump range.

All my Exploration Ships run Mil-Grade armour and a full set of Weapons.

But if I was sitting on alot of Exploration Data - getting the hell outta there would always be my top Priority.
In such a situation, nothing else matters.

If running is not possible... Well, I sure hope Frontier has the money to rent the Salt storage facilities they'll need.
Nothing beats losing weeks, months or even a year of Exploration to some unprovoked RNG-based NPC gank. Doesn't matter what color or shape the NPC is.

Low mass is too important to my exploration ships. I've no interest at all in fighting Thargoids, so no.

I totally agree, but some players have been carrying weapons for months thinking the Thargoids are coming. They weren't. They are now. Or rather, a few months from now.

Pffft! I will not carry weapons on my exploring ship. Unless the Thargoids are WAY out in the black, I have nothing to worry about. Even if they do come out here, I will try and run.

Yeah, no, unless they provide a way to submit exploration from far away, I'm not going to spend months out in the void just so I can get blown up by aliens and lose everything.

Yeah, I'm currently around 1,300 or so LY outside the bubble (and sitting on some unclaimed data), last thing I need is getting blown up and losing an entire month worth of exploration data if it turns out the ships are attack on sight.

With no atmo-landing or other major update on the Stellar Forge in sight AND the narrative-driven Thargoid update will focus on the bubble, once I return, I will hang my exploration boots for good anyway.
